I'm about 14 hours behind here, so I'm gonna reply to all the posts I wanted to in one long post instead of clogging up the thread with a bunch of posts in a row.

Tyler Bray had elite arm talent. Could sling it all over the field.

We don’t need a running QB in this offense. We need a QB who can, you know, throw the football.

Ideally, no.

If our OL has a few injuries or guys don't take a big step forward it might be nice to have, though.

No. Too many games did Dobbs throw the game losing interception. Didn't happen with Iceman

With defenses like the teams Clausen played with, Dobbs wouldn't have had to throw late against teams OSU, Vandy, USCE, or A&M. I think Clausen is #3 behind Manning and Shuler, though. Dobbs is 4 or 5 on my list.

Because most of the play calls were screens to CP or jet sweeps to Ishmael

They slung it all over the place with Bray and Chaney. Had so much faith in Bray's arm talent (because it was very, very good) that he attempted more low percentage throws and it negatively affected his YPA. Dobbs Sr. year was more efficient when you consider what he brought to the running game, but yeah Bray had one of the best arms we've seen a QB here have.

Yes but bray threw the ball down field. Dobbs tossed the ball to the running backs 7/10 times. He had very very few passes past 25 yards in the air. Dobbs was good for us in a time that our coach sucked but give both players the same coaching staff and same players of a good team a dobbs would look terrible and bray would look like a 1st round draft pick.

Mostly true, but Dobbs was one of the most effecient long ball passers in the SEC his Sr year. Was never very good at the long ball until then, though.

Hopefully a finally live up to their potential Tuttle and Phillips to go along with a rejuvenated Taylor. Bring Sapp, Peterson, Bituli, Shamburger off the edge. Maybe those guys can pressure this year? We have some good defensive coaches so surely they can figure something out. Not sure how good Grier's OL is.

This has got to be the optimist's take on our defense right now. We're not stacked by any means, but we've got some guys in the front 7 with potential who just haven't been well coached. A coach who's good with Xs and Os and focuses more on simplifying things and not asking guys to do more than they're capable of should, theoretically, be able to put a decent unit on the field for us as long as we stay healthy. Gonna need someone to step up at CB, though.

We don’t have near enough in the trenches for me to be confident in more than 6 wins. Our secondary is extremely unknown to bad other than Nigel Warrior. Not all of these guys are going to go from bad to good with better coaching. Everyone thought Tyler Byrd would excel with different coaches and he can’t even get settled in at a position.

I think we'll be fine at Safety. Abernathy and Kelly have played solid football at different points in their careers. Jackson has a lot of promise. I think Kelly and Pruitt will be able to get one of those guys to at least be solid opposite from Warrior. Depending on how CB works out it wouldn't surprise me to see us put one of our safeties at NB at times over a CB.

CB is a huge question mark, though. I'm just hoping that Taylor and Thompson can bring something to the table there and hopefully change the dynamic of our defensive backfield a bit.

Big if, but yeah. They've got a lot of talent on their offense at RB and WR. OL should be solid.

I'm not expecting a whole lot out of their defense, though.

Yep. Not sure if Mullen can turn that position around in 1 offseason but, like you said, RB and WR will be strengths for them. OL should be decent too.

I think our offense is as good as theirs overall.

RBs- slight edge them
Wrs- Us
Qbs- push
TE- edge us with Wood Anderson
Oline- no idea what either of us have.

Can someone tell me why Florida is getting all this love when they sucked as bad as we did last year with an easier schedule and why people like Murray say we don’t have any talent? I think the easy thing is to say UT has no talent and will go 5-7 or 6-6. However recruiting ranking services and players still on roster have UT tied with Florida for second in the east with most 4 and 5 star players. Maybe we have talent we’ve just had bad coaching. Maybe we come out and kick WV’s tail and roll into Florida 3-0. Maybe we will be better than people want to believe because it’s easy to kick Tennessee right now. I’m getting pumped to prove people wrong this season.
The question is do we have enough SEC talent to be competitive. I think the answer is yes but outsiders are going to have see it to believe it.

I think they've got us on OL. They weren't too bad up front last year and get most of their guys back. Not sure what their depth looks like, though.

I'm not sure about WR, either. I think we're solid at WR, but I'm not sure how balanced we are at WR, either. Idk how well Callaway and JJ complement each other. I think they've got really similar skillsets. That's not necessarily a huge negative or anything, I just think ideally we need someone with the speed to take the top off of better defenses to step up and be a part of the rotation as well.

Richmond, Kennedy, and Smith (if available) are solid... the rest have something to prove IMO

WV will be a pretty solid test

Yeah and it's looking like Carvin will be one of the starting 5. I like his upside and all, but unless it's Trey Smith starting a true freshman up front is never ideal.

I am hoping that the new scheme and emphasis on using more TEs/FBs will help us do better on the LOS this year, though.
