There is nuance to this. Just like every city, are there bad areas? Sure. Are there good areas? Yes. I’ve had to defend it for eternity because there are also some of the wealthiest zip codes in the state in Shelby County. There are 10,000 UT alumni in Shelby County. It’s my home.

Lived in Memphis for 3.5 years. Met awesome people and loved my time there. Never felt unsafe.

I’m sure others have a different experience tho. Just offering mine.

Got to attend a professional development led by some Memphis educators. The support that your teachers have district wide is incredible. They had me considering moving!

There are bad parts to any city Memphis' size so I hesitate to say that reputation is earned. I live in the mid state and Nashville has a lot of crime too. There are a lot of parts you don't want to be found in after dark. I've been to Memphis a few times but it seemed fairly normal to me.

Every area has good and bad places. But the crimes per capita that people are talking about when they say it's a bad city is higher than average in Memphis. And it's not a well cared-for city in terms of roads, infrastructure, schools, government, etc...ON AVERAGE. Just because you can find elite paradise oases there doesn't negate the other deficiencies. Just because there are tons filthy rich people there doesn't make it a safe city. Or a good one, but that's more subjective. Nobody said it has no redeeming qualities, it's just a below average place by plenty of metrics, some of which don't matter as much to you as they do to others.

The reason you have to keep defending is because people who aren't emotionally attached to it can clearly see its problems. Tons of mothers of murderers say what a sweet boy he is lol.

I don’t need to keep discussing it because I’ve done it too many times. You would think other Vols fans would show some compassion for 10,000 other fans who care about the county and make it their home. That’s the frustrating part.

Great areas DO negate the bad areas. My town has one of if not the best public school districts in the state. So, yes, it matters. My town is one of the safest based on its population. I’ve been here for essentially 40 years than the 4 at UT.

Not really. Having a paradise on one side of the railroad tracks doesn't offset the dump on the other. If you just pick an elite suburb and say you should judge the whole city on that, you won't get many people to agree with you. Most people would rather not have a ton of murders happening at all, regardless of whether it's your neighborhood or the one across the tracks.

There are plenty of elite school districts in the country that aren't part of a higher than average crime metro area.

Like I said, 10,000 alumni should make a difference, but people watch the news instead.

I bet there aren’t many elite school districts in rural areas. They are all within higher populated areas, where crime happens. A vast majority of homicides occur in the same areas….throughout the country.

I never said to judge the “whole” city…but I did say it’s not nearly as bad as people think or want it to be.

But per capita murder rate is highest among large metro areas. It's prudent to be aware and understandable that some would choose to not live there.
