I was catching up on the Argentina/Egypt game. (YouTube TV has a feature to view key plays......which is nice.) On the 2nd Egypt goal, the one where the Egyptian scorer took his shirt off, VAR stopped the game for a review. They ended up calling a penalty on Egypt that happened on the far side of the field. They wiped the goal off and awarded Argentina a free kick. It looked like a bull crap call to me. The onfield ref let it go but "Birmingham" was able to screw Egypt over.

Is that normal for soccer? I've watched the world cup before, but I don't remember VAR. It looked to me like the more desirable team got some help from the officials in the booth.

Your eyes don't deceive you. Especially when, later in the game, Argentina scored a goal in the exact same scenario when Mo Salah was fouled at the other end of the field and it was not called or reviewed. Which is why the Egyptians lost their minds.

Edit to add: I just saw a stat that small countries are 0-9 in major VAR calls in this tournament.

There will be a rooftop bar/water park with a double suicide slide overlooking the field.

FIFA will stop at nothing to ensure that we get more high profile games which in turn gets more views which means more advertising money. They’ve had their eyes set on the France vs Argentina rematch from the start, and they’re obviously pushing for that.

Regardless of my personal love for soccer and the World Cup, it’s also important to remember that FIFA is arguably one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet. And that’s not me being hyperbolic, just do a quick search on FIFA’s past corruption scandals and you’ll see what I mean.

So to answer your question: normal in the sense of does this type of VAR scheme happen all the time? No. But normal in the sense of “is this FIFA doing what they can to control the outcome”? Yes.

I’m pulling for Norway the rest of the way through. I enjoy watching them play. Plus, there’s something cool about having the land of the Vikings beat the rest of the world.
