I can't afford anything at Lil Nicky's High Priced Car Emporium. I have 3 teenage daughters. I am thinking of having to scale back my VN subscription if that tells you where I am at.

However, my middle daughter is looking at majoring in psychology (clinical) and UTK offers through PHd in that field so she is highly considering UTK. Praying that we find the best fit for her and that it involves Knoxville.

Clinical Psych is harder to get into than med school. No matter where she winds up for ugrad, I can't emphasize enough that she needs to make as many connections as she can. She needs to know her professors, GTAs, etc. and let them know early what her plans are for grad school. And don't limit connections to whatever school she's at.... As a ugrad attend events, talk to visiting profs and guest speakers, email profs doing work you're interested in pursuing even if you have no interest in going to wherever they're at. Connections are 100 percent crucial.

If she can find a way to publish anything in the field as a ugrad - even a book or article review - (and that's a tall order but still...) do it.

Thank you for the advice. I will pass it along for sure. This child is incredible, but I know that the world is often as much about who you know as it is about what you know. Thanks again.

now that is one of the issues I have with modern upper bourgeois society. Have's, have nots. Buddy buddy dynamics, a tail as old as thyme. Deals made on the green versus merits of body of work.

Spoken like a true introvert.

Old co-worker of mine used to say the worst thing about nepotism is that it usually works. Compared to people hired solely for what they put on their CV, give me the nepo hire all day long lol

But, so many stories about the incompetent kid taking over for the parents and destroying the company.

The problem is there's 250 applicants with similar applications and 5 spots. If not guided by a policy or departmental interest (e.g. looking for someone who wants to study x or y), people will naturally choose people they like or that they can relate to. Sometimes they'll choose someone because they find them unique or interesting. It's why so many people on the outside, have such a hard time breaking through. Your qualifications don't enter into it because everyone else has those qualifications, Your choice is to either network or be unique enough to get in.* The worst part is that, unless you're born into it. no one tells you this ahead of time.

*On rare occasions you'll have someone so above the pack that it's a no brainer but these are elite applicants competing against elite applicants. The scale only goes so high and the differences are usually negligible enough to not matter if someone has slightly better scores, especially when ugrad grades can be all over the place for various reasons.

Hello. My dad passed from a glio in ‘22. Prognosis was likely worse bc they couldn’t operate on his and he was misdiagnosed for a bit but I understand completely what your family is going through. I took time away from work and became his full time caregiver. This included arguing day and night with insurance companies. Such a horrendous disease.

I don’t mean to sound a certain way at all but now is the time to spend as much QT with your pops as possible.

I know the medical bills and stress are piling up and that’s a whole other separate part of the process. But don’t get too sidetracked and keep the main the main thing.

Have you looked into clinical trials for glio patients?

🙏

Yeah, I mean that is the trope. I don't think the numbers would support the idea that it is a bad strategy though. Businesses fail under the second leader on a routine basis, no matter how that second leader is chosen. My theory would be that nepotism is anti-mericratic, and that feeling of unfairness creates observation bias where everyone notices when the nepo hires fail.

In terms of the kid taking over his parents business, I think there is another way of looking at it where it is an obviously good idea. Say the kid takes over at age 30. You have 30 years to train someone to run your business? On top of them being someone you trust more than anyone else except maybe your spouse? It makes obvious sense.

In terms of nepo hires, I've just seen it work out great a million times. It just has to be framed right. "I know this person, I know they'll be a good fit on the team and I know something about their character, or at least the character of the people around them. I'll take that over the complete unknown character and work ethic of someone with a better CV.". That's different than "I'll hire this person because they are my buddy and I don't really care if they are good at this job or not".

VETO. Depth is great but I’m a believer in star power over depth if you already have the latter and van buren doesn’t make us better and Anderson alone is not worth jermod.
Yep, they’ll have to throw in two 1st rd picks as well to move my meter. Basically two Louisiana 5 stars the next two cycles
