Rebuilt Engines

I have a 1991 toyota 4runner and have a blown exhaust valve on my #6 cylinder. She has taken me all over the U.S. and I have personally put 160,000 of the 215,000 miles on the original motor. My options right now are to rebuild, drop a new engine, or scrap the truck and find a newer car.

Funds are tight and I don't really get excited for another car payment. I won't get much for her anyways if I were to try and sell, and may just be worth a down payment.

So my question is does anyone know a good place with good prices for rebuilt motors? I have a 3.0L vze engine all original.

No. But I know an awesome mechanic. And I know a couple guys that may not charge as much as a shop would.

please share. i am mainly a backyard mechanic, but an engine replacement is out of my capabilities. it will probably be may before i can do anything, because i start working as a contractor for tva next week and will be working 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week, through april. so time will not be on my side to deal with this, but i will have some more cash to invest depending on the route i need to take.

Sounds like you need a rebuilt head although that engine has a lot of miles. Is it using oil? With your new job options maybe rebuilding the heads would be a cheaper option and roll the dice on the block holding up until brighter days come.

that was one option that i had considered, but am afraid of rolling the dice on the block having issues. as for oil usage i may need to replace the main seal from deterioration over the years, but other than that i have no leaks around the block itself. oil usage goes with the weather with this truck. in the winter i don't really burn any, but in the hot weather it seems like it burns much more. i have not researched too much in terms of having the motor that is in there now rebuilt versus just getting an already rebuilt motor. i do know of a guy who will rebuild the heads for about $500 which seems to be a good deal on that. i am just kind of concerned that once if i rebuild the heads that the block will have something go wrong.
