is that he kicks the ground before the ball. Having hit a few fat shots in my life I can understand. My question is can we coach the kid out of this and is this sort of mental issure common with kickers?

As for kicking issues, some of those can easily be explained as problems unrelated to Russell. Yes, the Vols haven’t gotten consistent results from highly touted young kicker Michael Palardy and punter Matt Darr, but is Russell to blame for a top kicking prospect going through a mental slump and kicking the ground before the ball on multiple occasions?

Maybe the group needs to get the heck outta the way and he wouldn't kick them as much.

Kicking the ball up the center's hind end isn't hitting it fat, it's hitting it REALLY thin.

what palardy has going on is akin to a golfer having the yips in putting. Doesn't look like he follows through completely. It can be cured but that isn't a given. That is why a coach who can spend time and mental energy with him is so crucial. Actually Darr is going through the same things as a punter. I mean he may hit it high but his distance is abysmal for a good college punter. A coach helping mentally and providing confidence should also help him. Neither is hitting the ball like they did in high school, who's fault is that???

agree, but I think more than anythng it just points to a kicker not hitting the ball the same way twice and being a basketcase.

Darr's struggles to me are even worse than Palardy. I didn't see him hit a punt that turned over for the last half of the season.

I remember commenting on that during on of the games this year that he kicked the ground first. You could see the grass/rubber pellets come up before he even hit the ball.

It is not uncommon for kickers making the transition from a block to kicking off of the ground. I kicked for 9 years and the transition from hs to collage took some time. It is a technique issue. Plant foot and body relation to the ball placement. Some guys never get past the ground scraping. I went 4 years in college impacting the ground, 75% career kicker and schools all time leading score. The ground thing us not all that us going in here.

Didn't we try to re-coach Stone to change his hands and it didn't work? I would bet that re-coaching Palardy to change his style of kicking will not have good results. He will probably get worse results.

The kick against Kentucky was definitely a chili dip. He hit the big ball before the little ball.

The little low line drive against Vanderbilt, I don't think he hit the ground on that one. From watching the replays, he looked like he just hit way too high on the ball.

He definitely lost his swing...

In golf, the "fix" is to watch the ball as you hit it. Easy to say, some days hard to do.

Yeah, seriously. You got to keep your head down. I did watch him for that and he does appear to be staying down on it. For whatever reason, he just missing it with his swing.

From the recruiting forum...

How about we nickname the 2012 Tennessee Vols offense....

"Multiple Scorgasms" ?

Sounds like he was over-compensating.

the most glaring problem is he is still on the team. time to boot (pun intended) him and move on.
