Former Alabama coach Ray Perkins passed away this morning at age 79. He coached at Bama from 1983-1986 he was a pretty good coach in his 4 seasons there unfortunately he was the coach that followed Bear Bryant.

Coach Perkins also played at Bama. His three seasons featured two national championships ('64 and '65) as what should have been a third ('66). Bama won the SEC all three years.

Took down the Tower and flouted other hallowed traditions. Still, he was on an upward arc and then bolted back to the NFL...ultimate foolhardy move.

I remember Perkins as a player. I always thought that he was one of the Bear’s favorite players from the way he talked on his TV show. He was a Larry Seivers type of player who worked hard and made big catches. Probably did not have as good hands as Seivers.

Didn’t Perkins also coach the New York Giants?

He got big $$& and part ownership of Tampa franchise. He’d been a fool to pass that up. SEC had Auburn & Florida both cheating like hell then and it was all the others could do to remain competitive

Big 80’s money. Bama’s always been the cream of the crop in the cheating game. Guess that’s why he was never heard from again.

Bama has always played by a different set of rules in the SEC. It was a running joke when I lived in Alabama that the NCAA would visit Auburn and everyone would ask what did Alabama do this time?

You need to Google the Gene Jelks cheating scandal at Alabama while Perkins was coach. He learned well from the Bear.

I remember. That’s why I uttered a silent laugh at the suggestion that any program was outcheating them.

He turned them around. They had been a joke in the late 70's (Miracle at the Meadowlands and such). He had a great eye for defensive talent. When they made the playoffs with such a young team in 1981, it really turned some heads. They even beat the Cowboys which they hadn't done in eons. He handed Parcells a great job.
