Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini vs Duk Koo Kim

I remember watching this fight on tv live when I was 8 or 9. Strangely, it is one of my lasting sports memories from childhood. I remember cheering for Boom Boom throughout the fight and then feeling really sorry for Kim as the referee stopped the fight and literally cradled Kim in his arms.

They had to cart Kim from the ring and the announcers were immediately concerned that something was terribly wrong. Back then all you had was the newspaper to follow for updates. So, each day I would rush to get the paper to see how Kim was doing in the hospital. Actually, the national nightly news also reported on it each night. He was basically brain dead but married his fiancee mentioned in the article. Like I said, it is really strange that I've never gotten past watching that poor guy get beat to death on tv. When the news announced he died some days later, I was absolutely crushed.

I was just a kid then. And from time to time I still think back about Duk Koo Kim. I had never heard this side to the story before so thanks for posting.

I was about the same age when I saw that fight on tv. It was one of the last title fights I remember ever being shown on network tv, also. I'm going off of memeory right now, so this may not be correct, but I don't even think Kim was the original fighter Mancini was supposed to fight. for whatever reason, the other guy couldn't fight and they had to scramble to find a replacement the week of the fight (I think). Also, if I remember correctly, it was like a mid-Saturday afternoon fight on maybe CBS? It wasn't like the Wide Wide World of Sports broadcast, I don't think.

But yeah, amazing that something like that was televised 30 years ago.

I remember that fight as well, I think it was an outdoors event. That was back when boxing was great and I loved Boom Boom, great fighter. He was never the same after that, sad day all around.

I watched it live also. Couldn't have been more than 10. Even at that age, I knew something was wrong when he tried to get up and collapsed.
