With conference play starting, no way we'll see some of these things continue
In D1- 6 of top-7 are SEC
BA- 6 of top-8
CB -5 of top 8
PG- 6 of top-9
Coaches- 6 of top-8
NCBWA- 6 of top-8
However, SEC teams will start shooting up the RPI as SOS improves exponentially.
Three opening weekend series involve two ranked teams (D1 Poll)
(3) Mississippi at (6) Vanderbilt
(1) LSU at (15) Texas A&M
(24) Alabama at (5) Florida
Three series involved a single ranked team
(2) Tennessee at Missouri
Auburn @ (7) Arkansas
(16) South Carolina at Georgia
Only one series involves unranked teams
Mississippi State at Kentucky
Miss State (12-5) is the only team that I think is not good (right now) The Bulldogs did have decent wins this week against Nicholls and UL.
Kentucky has played one quality opponent this far (Elon series 2-1) but beat an "ok" Indiana on Tuesday.
Vanderbilt has 5 losses with some questionable losses to Central Ark, Nebraska, and LMU. Concerning? 4 of the 5 losses came on weekend and 2 on Friday games. The Commodores bear watching as these weekend struggles may be a red flag. The Rebels (14-2) have only 1 weekend loss out of 3 losses. It's fortunate for Vanderbilt that they host this weekend. This series starts on Thursday- which is ok because their fans aren't watching their basketball teams in NCAA anyway. Mississippi lost on Tuesday at Jacksonville St for their 3rd loss
Weather is going to effect two series in COMO and Lexington. Lexington will not get cold until later Saturday and Sunday with rain on Friday. Both fields are turf.
LSU schedule is very front loaded (@aTm, Arkansas, Tennessee) so a fast start by them and they may be coasting late when they close with Alabama, @Auburn, MSU and @UGA. A mediocre start (4-5 or 5-4) would not leave LSU out of contention. LSU is still learning to play together as they have a ton of new, talented pieces.
Alabama (16-2) schedule has been embarrassingly bad Alabama has beaten one team (Alabama State) that currently has a winning record and they lost two over the weekend against the mighty Columbia Lions (5-6) for their first 2 losses. Alabama failed to reach double digit runs against Columbia in any game. The Lions had given up double digit runs in 4 of their prior 7 games.
Florida has reached double digits 12 times in 16 games against a more formidable schedule. The Gators should annihilate Alabama in Gainesville this weekend.
Way too early predictions. Who are the two teams that I don't think will make Hoover? Mississippi State & Kentucky.
Kentucky and Alabama should be battling for that12th spot. Alabama has a distinct advantage as they host Kentucky (next week) as well as Mississippi State in April.
Playing both Alabama and Kentucky on the road puts Mississippi State behind the 8-ball. They will need to play better than they did last season - and so far this season, to finish in top-12 or to even make the NCAA
