The thread on the 2001 Vols got me thinking... how would you rank the Tennessee Volunteer football teams since the Manning era started(1994)?

Here is my list...

An accurate assessment, though I would probably put '96 ahead of '99.

I thought about putting '96 ahead of '99. However, I still have a bad taste in my mouth from losing to Memphis that year...
Yeah, when I was leaving the stadium I felt an ill wind blowing and said to myself "that's the coalition bowl game blowing out the window"...

That would be more appropriate if the BCS even existed at that time. I agree with Hat that 96 should be ranked ahead of 99.

i will definitely never forget that memphis game. i had to work that day..........at best buy............and i sold TV's. Nothing like watching the replay of "the return" over and over, on 50 different TV's.........and having Bammers all around to rib me about it.:cray: that and the '01 SECCG have to be the most disappointing games i've ever seen (looooooooong marta ride back to the car from that game)

95 and 97 need to be swapped. I would rank an SEC championship team over a non championship team any day.

I wouldn't factor winning an SEC championship into it. Both teams had one loss - to Florida. The fact that the '97 Florida team lost twice and the '95 Florida team didn't is the only reason we won the SEC in 1997.

I think the '95 was pretty damn good. It was only one really unlucky and bad half of football away from playing for the national championship. That squad would be #2-3 on my list, with the '01 team being in the other spot.

I would say winning an SEC championship is the deciding factor. Regardless of why we won it, a championship is a championship. I totally agree that the 95 team was a great team. I would place them 3rd on this list, with 01 4th. That 95 team is the one which finally turned the tide (pun intended) against bammer. They also beat a pretty darn good Ohio State team in the bowl game. But when I look back at my favorite UT teams in my memory they are in order 98, 85, 97, 89, and 90, all SEC championship teams. That's the most important thing to me. JMO.

I wouldn't put '03 over '04 either. We only lost two games in '04 and won the bowl game. I think winning the bowl games give an edge to years with similar reg season records. I think '01 was second best too. Beating Florida in the last regular season game (Spurrier's last game at Florida field as their coach) was a real highlight for me. Losing to Lsu was extremely disappointing but then handing it to Michigan was awfully sweet.

Since this poll only went back to the PM era (1994), I thought about adding the 93 team, probably was a top 6 or 7

Tennessee lost 3 games in '04. They had the same record as the Vol team on '03. Both 10-3. I know the '04 team won the SEC East and won their bowl game. The win at Miami in '03 was huge. Beating the Canes on thier homefield to end thier winning streak was a great day for the Big Orange!

I do admit.. both the '03 and '04 teams were similar. I just felt with having senior QB in '03.. along with the win at Miami, they deserved the edge.

1994 ahead of 1999, 2003, and 2004? Uh, no.
