Of course I take the Gamecocks seriously. Spurrier has definitely elevated their play. My point is that he still hasn't surpassed the level that Holtz reached, but could not maintain.

the only thing i would say to that is that SC had never beaten FL and had never beaten TN in knoxville...and he did both...in the same year.

He's definitely taken them to places they haven't been. All I'm saying is that SC football is at the same crossroads Holtz had them at in 2001.

Auburn won or tied for first in the west in 4 out of 5 years coming into this season ('01, '02, '04, and '05.) That is worth some kudos, at least.

...and went 7-5. Spurrier has yet to prove he (or anybody else, for that matter,) can put the Gamecocks at the top of the conference.

Are we back to talking about co-division championships again? It's very simple:If you didn't play in the championship game, you didn't win your division.

I bring up that statistic simply to illustrate that if you can finish first (even in a tie) in your division of the SEC 4 out of 6 years, you are doing something right. I can't think of anyone not named Spurrier or Stallings that has done that.

He hasn't gone 0-11 yet and he's beat Tennessee. I know... I know... that 0-11 team was mostly Brad Scott's players. But I guarantee you that Spurrier would have been able to squeeze at least 3 wins out of there against Vandy, UK, or the 3 out of conference teams on the schedule...

For GAVOL: He's not detracting from Spurrier, but merely pointing that, while they are getting better, they have not yet eclipsed their best under Holtz. This is a true statement.

For others: The reason most people hold Spurrier in such high regard is that he can take a lesser talented team and make them competitive, or take a talented team and clean your clock. In other words, given equal talent, he's a good bet.

If you put TN's staff at SC, they'd have won about 4 games this year...maybe.
