This is NOT a fire Dooley thread (I have him #1!)

This is as if you were hiring them to come to Tennessee, not how they are performing at their current job.

Take all present-day factors into consideration, including, but not limited to: Chance leaves for other school/pros, current coaching job, amount you'd have to pay, recruiting challenges, ability to attract staff, etc.

My list:

1. Dooley (44 yo)- He's done a great job in what little time he's been at UT and is doing it the right way. I think he's the kind of guy who would be happy being here for 20+ years and making a legacy.

2. Saban (60yo)- Best coach on list, IMO. I fear he'd bounce shortly after seeing how hard it is to recruit at UT.

3. Les Miles (58 yo)- Similar to Saban, great coach but fear he'd go to Michigan at next opportunity after seeing recruiting challenges firsthand.

4. Mark Richt (52 yo)- He hasn't won it all at UGA but has been solid in 10+ years and is a super nice guy. Can he put together a decade of greatness without the fertile recruiting grounds of Georgia?

5. Dan Mullen (40 yo)- Has done a good job at Miss. State - still a little unproven, IMO.

6. Kevin Sumlin (48 yo) - Up and coming coach, would be worth risk over other options below.

7. Steve Spurrier (67 yo) - Arguably 2nd best coach on this list behind Saban, but gotta figure this dude is close to retirement. I'm suprised he's still going at USCe.

8. Gary Pinkel (60 yo)- Has done a solid job at Mizzou, but the hire wouldn't excite me by any means.

9. James Franklin (40 yo)- Has definitely pumped up Vandy, but is his hotsauce needed at Tennessee? Not really. This is where I think the list starts to get depressing.

10. Gene Chizik (50 yo)- won the NC with Tubberville's talent and Cam. Since then they haven't really seemed like a great team. After a rough season this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Auburn fanbase get antsy.

11. John Smith (63 yo)- Guy is super old and really nothing special, but here's to hoping he hires a good staff.

12. Will Muschamp (41 yo) - This guy is like a clown on the sidelines and seems to be doing the least with the most in the SEC. How is Florida not a contender with all of the talent on the roster? Mind boggling. All-star coordinator, meh head coach.

13. Hugh Freeze (42 yo) - meh

14. Joker Phillips (49 yo)- hahaha

Edit - added ages

Total irrational homer pick at #1.

Saban would obviously be 1st. Les probably 2nd. Spurrier 3rd, but I could argue him 2nd. Then maybe Mark Richt. I don't think Chizik is a good coach, but he's got a title, so I'll arbitrarily place him 5th. Then I'll insert Dooley 6th as a bit of a homer pick, and after that, it doesn't even matter. Mullen is a pretty good coach, so I'll include him at 6th or 7th.

I think if you're going for best actual coaches and assume they are all staying same amount of time, the list is very different, and agree with your top 4, in order.

BTW - Thrashers left Atlanta a while ago ;)

So you have Dooley at #1 but Saban at #2 even though Saban has won 3 NCs and is likely going to compete for his 4th this year? That's more than most schools (including UT) have in 50 years.

That's about the dumbest thing I think I've ever seen on this board, and that's beating out a lot of stupid things. People quickly forget how we ended last year.

Nah, I think people are skipping the first paragraph and going straight to the numbers.

I am very confident Saban wouldn't put up with Tennessee's recruiting situation for long and would go elsewhere after being at LSU & Bama. No doubt Saban is a better coach - but not if he's only here 1-2 years.

1- Obviously Saban
2- Miles- hard to argue w the talent he can bring in, his actual coaching is "different"
3- Petrino- oops he guess he is not around anymore, but except for Saban he is the best actual coach, but his recruiting not exactly stellar.
4. Spurrier
5- Richt- but too nice a guy for my taste
6.- Mullen- IMO is who made Meyer
7-Dooley- homer pick , would really like to see him move up this list

The rest- who cares , wouldnt want anyone, and wow what a clown Muschamp is on the sideline

Yeah it's a bit homer because of who's #1

But I feel this is worth pondering: would Saban be such a hands down a #1 though? If we're talking about hiring a new head coach, there's somewhat of a time factor involved (rebuilding, making program changes, getting in the types of players he wants, etc) and the guy's already in his 60s

(I was told yesterday he's a year older than Pinkel...weird, right?)

Finally - someone is looking at this as intended.

If we want to rank the best SEC coaches right now, at their respective schools - I 100% agree Dooley doesn't make top 5. But we all know that...

The question is who is the best coach who would stick around for a while, and become the next Neyland, Majors, Fulmer?

I think you have to list Will Cupcake as # 12. He is definitely doing the least with the most. Bad fit there...wanta be blue collar tuff coach with a pink collar, finesse state

I think that is indeed Derek Dooley....our next 20-year + man!

There is nothing clean about James Franklin.

And no way Saban is not #1 on this list. The absolutely only thing against him is age, he will be 61 next month.

I don't think we'd have the same lists though...the dooley at #1 is a bit much, even if trying to push the "he's younger, there's more potential time available"

Any list that doesnt start with Saban is absolutely retarded

OP wasn't making a real list, obviously. Just another Dooley Appreciation Thread and OP trying to figure out a way to thinly disguise it, imo.

First sentence about it not being a fire Dooley thread was dead give away.

Thread fails.

Miserably.

Saban is definatley at the top and I think he would have no problem recruiting at Tennessee or anywhere else. I would put Miles second, but it's a crapshoot after that. I would like to think that Dooley is 3rd on the list, but we need to finish this season to know for sure.

Dooley has proven he can recruit and manage the program well, he just needs to prove he can make the right calls and adjustments on the field consitently.
