If the UT head football coaching position were now vacant, of the 12 current SEC coaches, who would you select in order 1-12 to fill the position?

Rules: 1) Disregard $$ cost (UT has the dough)
2) Disregard the fact some coaches may have ties to
rival schools i.e. Mike Shula to Bama, Spurrier to UF
etc.
3) Think in terms of 3 years or longer, not just one
season.

My ranking:
1) Mark Richt
2) Steve Spurrier
3) Tommy Tuberville
4) Urban Myer
5) Les Miles
6) Mike Shula
7) Bobby Johnson
8) Houston Nutt
9) Phil Fulmer
10) Rich Brooks
11 & 12) Tie: Sly Croom and Ed Oregeron

I haven't tasted the Shula koolaid yet. He needs to beat a couple of people. He's beaten one good team; FL.

Meyer and Miles: too early. However, I am inclined to think that Miles sucks and is in over his head. Meyer can be good but he is learning on the job.

Richt, Spurrier, and Tubberville - or Holyfield, or Bloomenthal, or whatever his name is - look like the cream of the crop. Tubberville looks like he's got a heck of a staff and a good read on how to win. I'd say look out for AUB this year and the next few.

Fulmer, just to be honest, is about the last guy I want in a big game for all the marbles. That's not a shot, but just an observation. Take out the horseshoe year and what do you have? A bunch of really talented teams that didn't win anything.

Sylvester Croom? Hard to say, but it doesn't look very good to me. Orgeron? Same thing; but they have a pretty good defense.

Between the new guys Miles and Meyer I think Miles will fare better. With a better shot at recruiting in-state players with less competition than Meyer, he's already off to a better start. Meyer brings a system that is traditionally NOT UF football. People who'd have gone to UF for power football now have to see Gators go for West Coast style or even some perverted hybrid of West Coast/SEC football. Leak and others are scratching their heads wondering what in the world 'style' it is they are playing.

With Spurrier back, I see UGA and UF watering down as well. Spurrier might be the first USC coach to bottle up in-state recruiting and come up with a decent team. I don't think they'll ever recruit five-star across the board, but Spurrier has a tendency of even getting mediocre players to play five-star at times.

What all this means is that the likelihood of undefeated conference teams in the next few years lessens and lessens.

Is there a concerted effort to stir up some hatred with Auburn fans out there? Or is it just me?

If Steve Spurrier were here, with the talent, we would be ahead of everyone- hands down   :twocents:

I dunna know. They're leading the conference in offense after losing 3 first round draft choices. Other than a fluke loss to LSU they'd be headed to ATL for sure. They're always good on defense.

What did they do before last year? Tubberville still has a lot to prove as far as I am concerned, wasn't last year the first time they lost less than 5 under TT?

I agree for 1-2 years but age weighs against him and that only reason to put Mark Ritch first.

You may be right. But I think Nutt would have done better with Fulmer's talent especially in the BIG games.

i say give croom a couple more years.

Why not give Meyer a couple more years, too? You want to bump him down the list.

I actually don't know if you are right. Too early to tell with him.

Tubs still has 2 losses...maybe 3 if he losses to Alabama...and should have a 3rd already due to a phantom pass interference call against UGA

He is grossly over-rated

He was almost fired before 2004 season

But look what he lost to the Pros this year and how crisp his offense is. He should have beaten LSU save for his kicker missing 5 FG's.

I'd take Spurrier, followed by Richt... Fulmer after that, I guess.

I want to see what Tuberville can do in the next three or four seasons... it took 4 years for the Campbell/Brown/Williams team to materialize into anything.

Everyone else is pretty much unproven in the SEC.
