I will have to defer to @1RBFjr or others Admittedly, I’m a newbie and attended my first modern era BaseVols game in 2021 when they first reopened LNS to full capacity due to COVID vs Arkansas. I saw the Max Ferguson walkoff and was hooked. Pre Vitello, I attended maybe 3 games in my lifetime, and those were during the Helton era. Now I make the trip from the ATL for 80% of the games. I’m hooked….🍊👍🍊👊👍🍊🍊

Well, I went through years of rosters to Todd Raleigh's first season in 2008. I don't know if I'm having some recency bias, but here's who I remember being better than average. Yes, I know loaded up on a bunch of pitchers, and a couple of catchers, but these were some lean years. Of course I'm interested in the opinions of others.

Jeff Moberg
Nick Senzel
AJ Simcox

Christin Stewwwwart
Vincent Jackson
Andrew Toles

Zack Godley
Drew Steckenrider
Luke Hochevar
Will Neely (some may not think this is a good choice, but when he was on, Tennessee had a solid chance to win that SEC game)

Yan Gomes
JP Arencibia

Good stuff. Could you add positions? Also, what is your starting lineup for Vitello era?

If Moberg makes the list then Will Maddox should as well. Maybe not statistically but he was the play anywhere guy for a few years.

Well, the first three were infielders, and the second three outfielders (admittedly I don't recall specific positions, other than Senzel at 3B and I think Simcox at SS). The next four were pitchers, last two catchers. I agree with @vol66 that Maddox is worthy.

Your catcher list is good.
The Vols have had a ton of great guys at that position even during the down years.

Mike DiFelice (only 1 season with Rod)
Javy Herrera
Ray Espinosa
James Northeimer
Hal Bibee (both)
Blake Forsythe
Benito Santiago (only 1 season with Tony)

what amazes me is that the Vols have not really had a super all-around catcher that CTV has brought here.

Has this been our weakest position the last few years?

I personally think it's hard to find a good defensive catcher with an exceptional bat.

Funny story- one of our kids played baseball with Mike DiFelice's nephew. It was absolutely hysterical when the grandmother (Mike and Tony's mom) wore out the umps. She almost certainly knew more about baseball than the umpires. Great family.
