Question?

Well since Witten, have we had anyone worth mentioning? This used to be an integral part of our offense, even with blocking. Now it's just another free ride scholarship wasted. Hopefully we can get some decent players in this position to add one more threat to our intimidating offense.

I think that we'll see more from the TE players with Luke on the staff.

...and he wasn't even a TE when he got to Tennessee.

You know it's amazing what works on those games. When a certain scheme is played on there it works like a charm. Instead the real team plays a different scheme and gets creamed. I swear there is something to planning with video games.... :mf_surrender:

Just seems like a waste to me. When is the last time a TE was hurt and we needed a capaple back up? Heck put another tackle out there! I think there are other postions that could use those scholarsahips. We may already have an All American there, we just don't get the ball to them!

Tightends are usualy athletic. The can be turned into Offensive Tackles. Eric Winston is a good example of a tightend being turned into an O-Tackle. He will be a first day pick in the NFL draft. They could also be turned into d-lineman. I see Lee Smith being turned into a defensive end. I could possibly see Stocker being turned into an O-Tackle. Goggans is another guy that could be a D-end

That's exactly what I was about to post. Kids who play tight end in high school are usually some of the best athletes on the field. Once they get into a college weight program are able to add weight and play other positions.

Whatever. If Fulmer wants a complete short passing game, he's going to need to have a receiving TE or two handy.

They work really well on short fade routes, btw. Fade passes are clearly what Ainge has been practicing all season.

Pretty sure Witten was a DE and TE in high school.

He was, but I think he was playing DE his freshman year and then got moved to TE during the season to offset depth issues.

Most of the tightends are also defensive backs aswell or can be converted easily. Tightend is a athleticly underrated position.

I thought this was obvious. Look at the physical attributes on these kids listed as "TE's" and you know why we sign so many. The fact that they are listed as a "TE" does not mean anything about where they will play when they get to UTK. We obviously need a few good TE's to run Cutcilffe's system. so they are going to bring in a large number of them, when they get on campus they will see which ones are the best at the TE position and then the others have great size, athleticism, and speed and so they can move to any number of positions.

It seems to have worked in reverse the last few years. Leak, Reed, McClure all came to UT to play other positions and wound up at TE. Reed was a punter! (I think) So maybe I just answered my own question!
