I will be a sophomore next year at UT and will be living off campus across the river. Me and my friends want to tailgate for the games somewhere on campus but we are not sure where we could do this. So my question is this-

Are there any spots that you can park with your Commuter Tag on campus so we can do this? And also, if we pack all of our tailgating items in the car the night before, park it on campus and get there by other means in the morning, will the UTPD go around and see if we have a parking pass for that specific lot for the games? I am asking this early so I can go ahead and plan for the games. Any advice is welcome!

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this either, so if it needs to be moved, move it to the appropriate place.

All the commuter lots are used for gameday parking. you're basically SOL if you wanna tailgate on campus.

The Gateway? I think you're out of luck when it comes to tailgating. What I do is drive over to campus and park in the White Ave. garage. There is someone there checking tags, but I really don't think they care whether it's commuter or not. At least not the times I went. After you park, make friends.

Ya, i'm living in Gateway next year. I've thought about going to the garage on Lake Ave close to Cool Beans. I know there are some Commuter spots near the bottom levels there and the rest is Non-commuter.

Cool....my son just finished his 1st year at Gateway. He says he likes it.

I'm pretty sure that the bottom level (Commuter) is for football parking passes only. You can try to get up on the Non-Commuter level, I don't think the old man at the gate can make out the tag, so as long as you have one you're good. The Gateway is a pretty nice place. I'll be there again next semester. They are a little disorganized, but I've heard most are like that. They are good about maintenance requests. The location isn't as bad as people think. I'd rather be there then in the fort.

we usually pull up to where we tailgate (music bldg area), drop off the stuff, then drive down and park on the street on volunteer blvd. there are usually spots early past trecs and on down towards andy holt ave. one game we were late and parked in tyson park and walked up.

What do you do with your things after you have dropped them off? I'm assuming you wouldn't want to carry it all the way back to Tyson Park. I guess that leads me to another question. Do the police check the street meters close to frat row and the Intramural fields to see if the time has run out? If not that sounds like it could be a possibility for me.

Well, we put stuff like tv's and what not inside, or else in someone's car who was able to get there wayyy early and park close.

You can park in teacher lots and things like that behind andy holt and Reese, just get there early. I haven't been at UT in two years, but when I was there we did that every Saturday. You'll basically be tailgating alone, but it beats the heck out of paying for a spot.

In my experience (been a student of some sort at UT 2002-present) students have no parking rights on game day whatsoever, as far as commuters go. You need to approach parking/tailgating as if you were not a student at all, because it doesn't make a difference. All commuter parking is for alumni donors. I usually pay 10 bucks to park in the back of the Fort and walk from there, or walk from South Knoxville, or bike and park my bike within the building my office is in.

Make friends with some people in the Fort to tailgate, or make friends with a tailgater on campus. Sorry, UT isn't very friendly to students on game day.

EDIT: Let me add that the Muslim school in the back of the Fort only charges 10 dollars as of last year, and the money goes for the school. They are good people and I consider it a good cause.

Yeah, as long as they're not bagged.

Sweet, well then that is what we will plan on doing! I think the courtyard between the Music Bldg and the Architecture Bldg or the grassy area near the rock is where we will plan on trying to set up! Thanks for the help everyone!

I agree with IP. Go to the fort. Pay 10 bucks or so to park on someones yard and set up there.

O we will, like I said in an earlier post, we will probably get our things packed the night before and leave the car overnight and then get there early in the morning in another car and get set up. Because I was in the band last year, I didn't get a chance to tailgate so needless to say I am excited for some good all day long tailgating!

This will be my first year driving and parking for the games I usually ride a bus from a hotel but now have an opportunity to tailgate with friends. What does it mean if the meters have bags on them on volunteer blvd ?can anyone park at theses meters without paying

if they're bagged, noone can park there. I've never had an issue with not paying at the meters on gameday.

I'm sure you have some friends that live in the fort, and if not try to make friends with people early in the semester that do. I lived in a house in the fort last year (and will again this year) and there are lots of students that tail gate before the games at their house. Free Food/$5 a cup for keg beer is what usually went on last year. And of course all the sorority girls in their sun dresses
