Can we attract a top notch coach with an athletic director that states that this is not a great job? And how does a person with that kind of attitude keep a high level position in the Tennessee program? This shows me that mediocrity is the norm instead of the exception.

He stated this isn't as attractive a job as you would think. I beg to differ. I'll say this. Mike hamilton needs too look around at the people we need to beat on a yearly basis. Then he needs too decide who the guy is to at least hold our own in that regard. It all boils down to money. Are we willing too pay the big price tag that is going to come with it.

Guess who created that big price tag? The same person that said that this is not an attractive job!

I think that he said it on Sports Talk last year with Jimmy Hyams when they were discussing the contract extension for Fulmer. He did say it.

The comments you are talking about will have no effect on the quality of coach we are able to attract.

Hamilton badmouthed the head coaching job at Tennessee last year. Said something to the effect that Tennessee fans overrate it's prestige. That it would be hard to attract a good coach.

exactly.......for a program that always had the most seats, the best or second best record, and biggest recruiting budget, etc........we have the cheapest football program EVER........TIME to open you wallet UT, or the fans are gonna close theirs.........

I just heard a little while ago that a UT booster has spoken to Steve Spurrier's agent. Can anyone validate?

Yep, you bet we can. We have a fan base. We have plenty of dough. We have a huge stadium and fine facilities and up grade often. The largest recruiting budget in the nation. Tradition. We play in the best conference against the best coaches. When Steve Spurrier was the head ball coach for the Redskins, he was asked a question about which were the best college jobs and he said,,,Alabama and Tennessee. Our biggest challenge is to find a coach up to the challenge, after all we are screaming for the head of a guy who helped us to the SECCG just last year.

Although I believe that any breathing organism would be an upgrade to Fulmer, Spurrier is not the answer for our problems. Remember, to be a successful coach at UT, you must be able to go nationwide with your recruiting efforts and land talent out of states that don't rhyme with Tennessee. Spurrier is not interested in working that hard these days and wouldn't be able to recruit like Fulmer has. We need a coach who has shown that he can get guys to come and play for his program no matter where they are from. A coach from a smaller named school who has proven his recruiting abilities would be a good place to start looking. Spurrier might have been the perfect fit about 7 or 8 years ago.

I certainly am not advocating hiring spurrier, just to be clear, just saying he thought Tennessee was a wondeful job when he was golfing on the redskins' dime.
