Looking at taking the GMAT sometime in the next year. Aside from doing my best to keep up with business and financial news, I have been out of the business setting for quite a while. Any suggestions on study materials (I assume a Kaplan GMAT Study Guide would suffice) to include non-textbook / study guide type books? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I never took the GMAT, but I have taken quite a few of these kind of grad school entrance exams. I didn't really think the Kaplan books helped, I found a book of some old tests that had been released from the early 90s. I found that tremendously helpful. I'm not really sure what the GMAT is like, but if it's something where you need to study a lot of material and remember a lot of rules and concepts (like the MCAT), the Kaplan book would probably be worth it. If it's like the LSAT, where you don't really need to memorize any material beforehand, then just get some old tests. And get the official old tests, not the sample ones that are compiled by Kaplan or whoever.

I forget which program I purchased(I bet it was Kaplan) but it came with a CD rom that allowed me to take practice tests. It showed me my results and allowed me to practice on subjects that I performed poorly on. It helped me a good bit on things like grammar and sentence correction. I am lazy with my grammar and was really worried about my performance in that area of the test. The practice tests helped me tremendously with that area.

My son just took this and is starting the program this coming semester at MTSU.I'll get with him and let you know how he prepared and some areas you might want to brush up on.Sometimes it's what you once knew and have forgotten that gets you.

Quantitative, verbal, writing assessment,I guess there's a lot study practice sites. Seems like there was some simplier math(not for me) on it too like Algebra I maybe Algebra II, brush up. I know the verbal/word vocabulary is huge (any masters program),per two of my sons.

I used Kaplan, and not just the study guide, they had classes you could attend.
I found that helped, since it forced me to dedicate time to it

I echo the statements on study guides. Taking practice exams helps get you into the mode. The practice exams also help with your timing since this is a timed test. Many people that score lower than they would like don't finish all the questions.

There are also answer strategies - such as you get 1 point for each correct answer, zero for an unanswered question and -1/4 point for each wrong answer - so if you can eliminate all but two answers, guessing has a good payout (at least that's how it worked in the 80s when I took it). Not sure how that's changed but you get the point - there are approaches that will help.

As for content, it isn't really business oriented per se. (so being current on business won't help much other than maybe in the essay)

Make sure you are good on basic alegrbra, geometry (area of a triangle anyone?), sentence structure, basic logic, etc. Again, the study guides will likely have reviews that are helpful (for me the math review was invaluable).
