Question about this old Vols logo

It used to be on my old notebook that I bought at the "Campus Bookstore", corner of cumberland and 17th just by Clement hall.

Later, I was looking for some UT paraphernalia on ebay and found some old notebooks from the 50's with the logo on it (didn't buy it, just stole the .jpg of it). Also, an old decal. So it's old.. goes way back. It's cool. I liked it so much, the summer before my son moved into the FIJI house, we took the time to paint it on the wall of his room. Wonder if it's still there?
This blanket dates back to the late 50’s. The “logo/characature”has always been my favorite. This was purchased by my father, and I bet he never had it out of the plastic zippered case (regardless, I managed to keep it “hermetically” sealed all thru college and early adulthood, and has since sat atop some of my collection in my office for the past 25 years or so, love it). Dad had this exact same decal on his ‘72 bronco , tooling around north AL back in the ‘70s, and early 80’s until his premature death (it was and always will be the “bad ass” decal of Vol football).

hell yeah ! I drive a 77 f100 and it has a small power T on the bed but that would look really tough on the old “Beast”..... picture when I first got it before adding the Power T 😁5D24B828-6F96-4C03-8120-DCAE81943E32.jpeg7A6100F0-80DB-443F-A37E-AC896158C3E4.jpeg

Omg y’all have really come through on this. Love hearing the history. Gonna spend a little time reading in detail through all these responses that I’ve only just skimmed so far. Thanks for the info and stories.

My parents had this sticker in their car when I was a kid. It’s nit a giant block it follows around the outline pretty close. And it turned yellowish and the orange faded. I was wondering why that thing in the OP looked so familiar.

I think this was drawn by Bill Dyers back when he used to draw his play by play diagram of every football down for the Knoville News Sentiel back in the 40s -60s. You may want to ask the KNS if they have any details in their records. When my father became too ill to attend football games, he would listen to the games and draw the same play by play diagram on a piece of 8.5 x 11 inch paper. I think my sisters has a foler full of his drawings stacked away somewhere. I hope this is of some valuse to you.
Definitely was around in the 50's because my dad had the decal on his '57 Chevy. I agree it was on the Dyergrams from that era too but don't know if Bill Dyer was the originator.

My uncle was a student at UTK in the late 60s and early 70s. He lived in the dorm that was built into/onto Neyland Stadium. He brought this home from his college days, and gave it to me when I went to college in 89. He passed away about 5 years ago, so this is extra special to me now, but it was already my favorite piece of Vol memorabilia because its simply amazing and somewhat unique. My 14 year old orange-blooded son is begging me to give it to him now.

Curious if any of you know anything about the background or history of this logo? I appreciate anything you can share.

It is a Georgia Bulldog in a Tennessee costume.

Not quite. We did not play Georgia very often until the SEC formed the Divisons. Georgia had some very good football teams back then and they had some heated games with Ga Tech, Auburn, and Clemson. Florida was not much of a factor in the SEC during those days. In fact, most SEC teams looked forward to playing UF in those days. My how times have changed.

Pretty cool but the Rifleman will always be top dog in the Logo department.

Unless they come up with Smokey peeing on a gator, biting an elephant in the nads or making Uga his beeotch!

Wow, I had completely forgotten about those play diagrams in the paper. Thanks for the flashback.
