Ok, so I mentioned this in another thread, and nobody ever really answered so I figured I'd start it's own thread and see if I could get some answers. My friend asked me during the game the other day when the last time Tennessee returned a kickoff for a touchdown was. After racking my brain for an answer, I finally settled on Leonard Scott's TD against Georgia in '99. Also, I couldn't think of a punt return for TD since then either. It blows my mind that it could be almost 10 years since our return game has scored a TD, is this really correct? Or am I just forgetting one along the way?

Mark Jones returned a punt didn't he? And I believe someone returned an onside kick for a TD a couple years ago. Wasn't a 100yd run but it counts

We had a punt return for a TD against Vandy a couple years ago(I'm thinking Donte, but it could be the Mark Jones one UTVOLPJ is talking about), Bret Smith returned the onside kick, Rogan came close a few times last year, but I don't think he ever made it all the way.

This topic actually came up for me last week. I was at the Memphis vs. Louisville game and the guys I was sitting with kept saying let's get a good return on this one. So I asked when the last time they returned a kickoff for a TD, and most said they were pretty confident that their last was against TN in 96'(they play that won an ESPY).

I was less sure about the punt thing. You may be right about Mark Jones, and I kind of remember getting a punt return called back for some stupid penalty. I don't remember the onside kick return at all. Certainly not saying it didn't happen though. Any idea what year or opponent it was?

So I was pretty close to right. It has been esentially a decade since we returned a kickoff for a touchdown against legitimate kickoff coverage. I wonder how many kicks we've had run back on us in that span. I can think of the opening kick against Rutgers in '02, and the one after the blocked punt against UGA in '06. They also gave up a punt return for TD in that same game. I know there's more, but that's what I came up with off the top of my head.

I remember it well. It was a Saturday. Our "special" teams were anything but.
Someone kicked it to us at some stadium.
Someone on our team caught the ball and ran it back for a TD.
I think it was a day game since at that time there was no electricity for lights.

iirc replay showed he was down. is ESPY the "bad call" award?:)

Donte Stallworth never returned a punt? I know he was put on the return team late in his final year and he was explosive. This coincides with what I've been saying in other threads. The best player we have to return punts and kickoffs is E. Berry. Yeah yeah I know, we don't want him to get hurt, but he can take it to the house.

I just knew Hefney would eventually return one for a TD. Amazing that it never happened (on paper anyway).
