Why doesn't football have an early signing period? Especially since football has early enrollies.

I mean, basketball has an early signing period, but no early enrollies. It makes no sense to me that basketball has an early signing period yet football doesn't.

I would think a player who has made up his mind would like to sign his LOI to his college in August if he plans on enrolling in January. That way he's not pressured his whole senior season by other schools if he's already made up his mind.

So, is there any particular reason they don't have an early signing period in football?

Something that has been addressed in the past but has been denied by most if not all conferences, including the SEC.

Most believe that it wouldn't change things that much, only having a couple months in between the signing periods.

Basketball I believe it is 5 months in between periods.

I would like to see it in college football, I think if a kid is sure enough to sign on the dotted line than so be it. Make it in August after all the camps are over.

Don't see the problem with it.

Yeah, I think they should have an early signing period from like mid August to October 1st, that way high school kids who know where they want to go will be done with the recruiting process...that can put lots of pressure in these kids.

And I see nothing wrong with still letting recruits enroll in January even if they don't sign early (as long as they meet the requirements of high school graduation, of course). The early signing period is just for the protection of other high school students who know where they want to go and don't want other schools recruiting them anymore.

Probably was allowed before, yet many kids had reasons as to why they needed out of their LOI's to go to another school. Just less of a headache for schools, NCAA, etc...

I dont think you will see it.

Football Recruiting is a lot more down and dirtier....the longer you have to recruit these kids the better you got.

I like the idea of an early signing day. Many coaches are against the idea, but all I think it will affect is the guys that are already 100% sure where they want to go. It would really help the cost of recruiting to big budget schools like ours by virtually eliminating the need for in home visits and constant contact that you have to make to ensure a guy isn't stolen away by another school.

I think it happens eventually as the importance of recruiting continues to be more emphasized and apparent.

Are you able to compare the apples and oranges of the two sports? Basketball season goes almost the full year of school with more games. Recruiting is thought to be down and dirty there too (see AAU coaching complaints). I agree on if the recruit is choosing the school. It becomes a tougher rule to change with (like we are experiencing right now - Charlie Weis) coaching changes. So much of the environment and draw to alot of players is the NFL and how the program can move their dream of playing there up. Ok, now time for turkey!

Hoppin Bob on the movie Life says "It takes out all the fun in the courtship" so I don't know but that quote I believe holds some validity.
