found this on another message board...how much true is this...




While an asst coach at Iowa under Tom Davis, Pearl secretly recorded conversations b/w himself and Illinois recruit Deon Thomas.

Basically, he got Thomas to admit that Illinois was providing him extra benefits, but he kinda browbeat Thomas ... it was almost like, let me get this clown off the phone ... sure whatever, they gave me x ....

Pearl then turned around and reported Illinois to the NCAA. It was never proven that Deon Thomas ever received extra benefits from Illinois, and Deon went on to have a fantastic career at Illinois.

To this day, Bruce Pearl is persona non grata in Champaign. Illinois did gain a measure of revenge, drubbing Pearl's UW-Milwaukee team a few years back in the tourney.

Everyone already knows about what happened at Illiniois. Please get rid of this crap mods

There was a couple of threads on this when Pearl first got hired, I dont think it resolved anything. Basically this happened years ago before Pearl was ever a HC. Its not like Pearl was paying players to play at Iowa like Bama does.

As an outsider, I can tell you they are pretty fair here. Its not that you can't attack Pearl, i.e. "Is Pearl really a jerk?" But when you use a word that is commonly meant to be both antagonistic AND offensive in a vulgar way, then that is when they are going to take issue with you. And of course profanity is out altogether.

Is there a wink wink, nudge nudge about the mascot for USC? Sure, but that's hardly the same thing as calling a particular person an offensive term.

and i REALLY wanted to know how accurate the initial post was all about...i seriously never heard about it...is there a positive spin about it besides "who cares, its in the past"

A lot of people here know the full story - at least as much as we can know. That link is from an Illini fan/employee/something, so it will be a bit slanted.

I personally don't know CBP, but from his general public persona, I bet the Illinois thing is just like the Alabama thing. The school cheated, got caught (not the direct claim that Pearl/Iowa made), and the fans want to blame someone else besides their own cheating institution.

I understand...i backed up w/ another bad word...but yall defended it nicely...i take it back...i defended cause i thought i was being attacked
