Obviously pot smoking seems to be a fairly common occurance among college athletics. My question is, and please forgive my ignorance as I have never been high in my life, does pot smoking not have an adverse affect on an athlete's ability to perform at their highest level? Does it not affect their lungs like cigarettes would and cause an athlete to have breathing issues and have less endurance? Does it not dull their senses and cause them not to be as alert or reactive?

Personal and philosophical beliefs/thoughts aside, it's against the law thus that's the measuring stick at the end of the day.

Haha no pun attended at highest level...I see it no worse then athletes getting drunk. Actually better because you don't get a hangover and you make less dumb choices being high vs drunk.

Breathing issues? not from pot by itself.. you just simply couldn't smoke enough of it to do anything of that nature.

as for the second part of your question, it depends on how much you smoke.. one or two puffs just takes the stress away, helps you clear your mind and focus on the task at hand..

And when you smoke pot you usually just smoke one bowl/joint/blunt. With cigerettes you smoke a pack or more than one so it's a lot worse on lungs.

Pot is no where near as hard on the lungs as cigarettes. Check out this video. This is from 1 carton of cigarettes.

While your high, yes. But a good high lasts about 30-45 minutes. After that, its back to normal.

It's illegal at the end of the day, don't do it. Whether you agree or not. But its still hard on your lungs if you smoke it sure, anything you smoke is.

Thanks for all the answers!

One more thing. Everything I have read suggests that Pot is not habit-forming. I don't see how that's the case when these athletes have been warned over and over and over of the consequences of smoking it, that they are risking their careers and millions of dollars, and yet they continue to do it anyway. If it's not habit-forming, why on earth do these guys continue to do it??

I played Baseball in the minor leagues for 5 years, and I've seen guys use all kinds of illegal substances. The only time weed affected performance was when they used it right before the game. Once during warmups the pitcher was so stoned he fell off the mound and laid there laughing. It was priceless

Because they are stupid. Ive smoked for about 10 years and I could put it down any day I wanted. I only smoke because I enjoy it. If I needed to stop, it would be no problem. Pot is not habit forming. Maybe for weak minded individuals, and even thats a long shot.

I think its a character issue. They sort of take the attitude of "I'm gonna do what I'm gonna do and you can't stop me."

I think this is the case with DR. Hes probably been told his whole life hes the best blah blah so on and so on. So he enjoys getting high, and thinks he is invincible to the repercussions.

I have been smoking weed for 35 years. I have a BS degree and Doctorate. I am serious about my fitness. I have a 3 hr base. That means I can go at 80% of max for 3 hrs. Does weed help my lungs? No, it doesn't. Does weed hurt my lungs? If it does, it's minimal. Did it make me lazy? No. I now own two successful businesses. Weed has not hindered my progress in life at all. But I can't speak for everybody. Some people can't handle any type of self medication. It's illegal but the laws are relaxing because people are becoming educated about weed. I hear the most ignorant remarks about weed from people that have never tried it. Ignorance prevails in the U.S.

Alcohol is 100 times worse than weed! When the players are getting drunk they do stupid things like throw beer bottles and get in fights. When they smoke the most damage they do is destroying a bag of Cheetos while playing video games.

This. To make matters worse, 90% of this comes from politicians that probably go home and smoke it after their war on drugs bullsh*t speech.

I smoked for about 8 yrs and got a job that did random drug testing so I had to quit. I had no issues (addiction) quitting and haven't touched it in about 7 yrs. I don't personally have any problem with people smoking it, but these athletes are in or seeking to be in a profession that does random dug tests. Its just being a grown up. They either quit or lose their job same as you and me.

First it's illegal and I believe it should stay that way. No I'm no prud. "Party pooper" and OV have never come out of anyone's mouth....:whistling:

With that said I don't think it affects the lungs as bad as cigs do. Lots of junk in cigs that keep people addicted. I think weed is more addictive than most want to think. If you've ever "quit" for a period of time and then picked it up again...then it's addictive no matter how strong willed you are. I believe people that say they are back to normal after it wears off believes they r but not necessarily. They move the line to justify it. Occasional use no biggie. Everyday use...your fooling yourself if you don't think its not in some way addictive. Your body may not beg for it but ur mind does.

Obviously everyone is different but let's be honest the majority of the people open enough to start aren't strong enough not to get mentality addicted to it.

Stressed - take a walk and/or an aspirin. Both - healthy and legal.

Amazes me how many people think they have to be high on something to have fun and enjoy life. Why risk career, family, and health over something that may cause a major problem down the road?

Not holier than thou. Been there. Left there when I woke up to the truth. My highest highs in life have come from experiences with family, friends and faith.
