Who is QB1? (Merged)

Remember when the CFB world was a gasp when Tennessee paid Nico 2 million a year. Now it is 5-6 million to get a QB. Miami just offered Ty Simpson 6.5 even though he has already declared for the draft. I don't see how this is sustainable.
It’s not sustainable and it’s out of control. The bubble will burst soon

You could argue that Peyton played better as a sophomore in 1995 than as a senior in 1997. Certainly had better stats. It is a bit of a leap to use that as evidence that David Cutcliffe didn’t know how to develop qbs.

Not sure Milton is a good example. It looks as though his big flaw is being able to control his arm talent. He may not have the ability to adjust it physically when necessary. It hasn't gotten any better in his time in the NFL
Most accuracy issues are mechanical in nature. Footwork, hip rotation, release point, etc. are all coachable things. It wasn’t just always him throwing too hard.

Okay, but why do we keep losing QB's in the portal?
Poor evals....again. At least on defense, we've got new blood who hopefully will be better at evaluations and development. Of all the positions, it's just hard to imagine why QB is such a problem for Heupel and Halzle.

Heupel knew before the portal opened, that he needed a staring QB. He tried on a few top QBs, but nothing yet. If we don't get a starter, that's on Heupel
But again, we've been told that QBs will be tripping all over themselves to play for Heupel and his super secret, hyperspeed offense. How is that possible?

Correct. Swain said this morning only 2 QBs were brought in on visits. That's ridiculous. To this point Heupel has failed on the portal QB situation. These folks wanting the freshman to start will be upset when we win 6 games.

Issue is more likely that TN offense still hasn't shaken off the it's a "gimmick" and other schools are putting QB's in the NFL 1st and 2nd round

I'm sure that's the negative recruiting pitch. Meanwhile, there are only about 5 QBs a year that actually land in the 1st 2 rounds from any offense.

As bad as the defense was in 2025, it's ironic that the QB position could be the downfall of Heupel at TN. First the Nico debacle, now whiffing in the portal. Best QB in the Heupel era was a gift from Pruitt. Could be a tale for the ages.

Before the portal, we would have rolled GMac out there and not thought twice about it. Like when Colquitt went down against UCLA and we trotted out Peyton and Brandon Stewart I think, both as freshman. Sometimes you just need to put the foot down and go. At this point, I don't know why we even recruit HS QB's.

How you used to do something doesn't matter, it's how it's done today.
You either adapt or get passed by

It can be done either way. I guess my main point was why recruit/invest in HS QB's if they are really never going to get a shot? We are recruiting portal QB's to be a starter, not sit on the bench. That's how the optics look. We're not going to get the portal QB we wanted, that much is now clear.

If I'm Tennessee, I'm probably riding with Fazion as of this moment. He's had a while to learn out system since he's been committed to us for a while

Would I pursue other options? Definitely. I think our best bet is someone withdrawing from the NFL draft, a late portal entry or look down towards D2 and D3. Ole Miss got a heck of a QB doing that

As long as the defense is good, i like our chances. We made the playoffs in 24 that way

We have great recievers too. All you need is a QB who can do the basics

I am guessing you haven't watched much Faizon film. He is absolutely not ready.

I'd probably grab a 3* QB with high upside for cheaper and let other teams spend the millions coaching their 5* up only for him to hit the portal.
