Qb situation better than some believe

I disagreed a few times with him as well. Blew my mind he didn’t know Darnell Wright’s name or couldn’t think of it. But him calling HB a clone of BM was kind of puzzling.
And calling him a sophomore pocket passer. Im under the impression he’s the most mobile qb we have at this time. It was an ill prepared interview.

I think he was referencing his quick release when calling him a pocket passer. Which he is. He’s just fast as well. But the tools needed to be a “pocket passer” (quick release, fast decisions, accuracy) are all there. I don’t view him as either. In fact I almost feel they should make a new category of qb called a hybrid because there are a few (although more rare) that can be effective at both styles.

The QB situation is not a “situation” at all. We have a good SEC QB in JG. What we don’t have is protection for him to take more than a 3 step drop. That’s our “situation”
Agreed. I’m not one that’ll get involved in the JG debate because I do respect him and hope the best for him. This was more for those that feel we are weak at #2/3 spots as well as an outlook going forward.

This is such a dumb cop out. JG has as much responsibility for his taking sacks as the god awful OL. It’s a symbiotic relationship of ineptitude, and you people who continually dump it all over the OL are doing so out of ignorance or willful blindness.

It’s well recorded that no matter the side you take in the JG debate there are good points. With that being said please let this thread not turn into that. Let’s let this one be more about the depth at the position rather than concentrating on the short comings of JG as an individual. I mean no disrespect

This Josh Griffin guy is clueless. Not very knowledgeable at all. Harrison Bailey is 6'5" and 225lbs as a high school senior. The biggest knock on him (as far as some recruiting analysts say) is he is a statue in the pocket. Brian Mauer has been in our S&C program since January and is just now up to 193lbs at 6'3". One of his greatest attributes is being very mobile and being able to leave the pocket and throw on the run.

Does anyone have info why JG is so much less mobile than his scouting suggested during his recruitment? I am simply curious. I believe in him, I just wonder why he is so different than his HS scouting reports; read-option QB.

I disagree. At times it looked like we had no offensive line at all. Zip. Nada. Worst in the Country . And I’m not talking against Alabama etc. I’m saying any school w a mascot.

I just do not understand the constant criticism of JG. His numbers last year were excellent considering the lack of protection he received while trying to learn a completely new offensive system. (Do you realize we started a tackle last year who only weighed 275 lbs? In the SEÇ?) Under all that pressure he only threw 3 ints. 3!!! That's amazing. Then bring in a 62% completion percentage with the lack of talent around him.

He took a beating and never quit, never complained about the lack of protection. Last year was nothing short of courageous. He took hits where I wasn't sure he was going to get up. You don't think his teammates notice that? Word I hear is that the OL loves the guy and, hopefully, with the influx of talent on the OL and another year in the system, he's going to get the chance to show what he can do.

I've seen bad QB play at Tennessee over the years and some great QB play, JG can be great, let's just see what he can this year and next.

The height and thing always seem to “skewed” one way or another. About a week or 2 ago I heard 6’4 202 for BM. Maybe it hasn’t been updated? Idk. But I agree with you he seems out of the loop a little with his details of the new guys but the meat of his interview was generally correct imo. Can’t believe he couldn’t think of Darnell Wright’s name, HB is not a clone of BM unless he’s only talking about the “in pocket” game itself.

Please tell me how a guard or tackle whiffing on a block is on JG

He can’t do both. Folks simply dump on him because he’s not the next coming of xzy.

I think our freshmen QBs, inexperienced as they are, have intangibles that will make them more than serviceable if called upon. There will be desperation if they take the field, but Chaney will stabilize their jitters enough for their natural abilities to show up even if spotty. Opponents won't know their full capacities and will just assume they can rattle them into error after error. As usual, if that OL is even halfway decent, these boys will just add to the mystique season I foresee us having. A season of strange sights and implausible wonders. It's coming Volks, it's coming.
