I realize it's off week and there's not alot to be positive about when thinking about the immediate future of the program, but I have a few thoughts and more importantly, some questions for volnation.

Regardless of what coaches spew to the media about the QB position being "just one" position and surrounding them with great support can lead to success...... They know what we all know... There are very few championship caliber teams that dont at least have good QB play...In fact, it most always requires great QB play..I know we agree our QB play has been pretty bad.....IMO, I believe, regardless of what else happens this year or what anyones opinions are of him, JG will use his last year of eligibility somewhere else.

It seems as if we have an elite blue chipper committed in the Bailey kid from Marietta....He has the build and arm talent of someone who might be an NFL QB one day.....He'll be a true freshman next season when Grad transfer Kasim Hill competes for the starting job. Hill led Maryland to an enormous upset of Texas last season....and of course Mauer, who looks like a great competitor, but to me he looks really really tiny out there....I like him, just not sure if hes SEC caliber...I'm hoping we see soon : )

My questions are:

Shouldn't TN be an attractive place for another grad transfer to give Bailey a year? Perhaps one that's really good? Shouldn't the best graduate non SEC QB from a struggling power 5 program be our QB next season?

Do we see Bailey starting as a true freshman? I'm sure immediate playing time is attractive to him as well as a grad transfer.......

Pruitt may or may not be the answer. But it would be alot more clear if we had a good QB

If Harrison Bailey comes to Tennessee in 2020 I would redshirt him and take my lumps in 2020

The coaches don’t have that luxury. 2020 is year 3, they must put an encouraging product on the field.

Bailey and Mauer will compete and whoever can go through progressions the best and make good, timely decisions will win the job. If either of them are good at that, they’ll set the world on fire.

All the more reason to get Maurer tons of reps RIGHT NOW in live action.

Plan on JG being out
Plan on Shrout or Maurer transferring
Hill will be available so I’m interested to see what he brings to the table
Enter Bailey given he sticks

If it were me I’d say whatever I had to whenever I could to get a Grad transfer at Tennessee. Maybe you strike gold maybe you don’t.

We're now in the era of 25 max per year. Can't afford to gamble.

Harrison Bailey has the size. He has the arm talent. But one thing we don’t know is how he’ll handle playing on a team that’s NOT the best on the field every weekend. He’ll be drinking out of firehouse his freshman year just as BM is now. Not to mention BM is gaining valuable experience and weight in the meantime. With Hill I question 1) why he transferred to begin with and 2) how effective he’ll be after tearing both MCLs given (Hearsay) he uses his feet to buy time or run.

I think it’s a common feeling around VN that BM is at least “on the cusp” of becoming the starter. It may not be until after Bama but right now it seems likely and even if he’s not named the starter but he keeps playing throughout the rest of the season, it seems very counterproductive to halt his progress and start over with another freshman or go to Hill for all of 1 year. Makes little sense in the long run. Especially if he shows any signs of improvement between now and season end.

The downside to this whole thing is whoever wins the job between HB or BM the other is likely to transfer himself. Not because either are afraid of competition but rather because they are too close in class and both are too good to sit.

Good post...I'd like to see if Mauer will be too good to sit through

Hill was pretty good QB but got injured. Didn't look quite the same last year but may not have been fully healed. He should be competitive next year for the starter. Who gets it is another question

Bo Nix, Casey Clausen, Tua, Ainge/Schaeffer ......but yes it’s a tall order to ask a True Freshman to start

Bo has been around the Auburn system for years
Casey Clausen is arguably one of the best we’ve ever had. He’s named the ice man for a reason.
Tua is a generational player like him or not he can sling it and stays cool under pressure.
Ainge and Schaefer could have been great had they been used correctly.

Your really talking about a group of guys who don’t come along very often

It is a tall order to ask a Freshman, even a spectacularly talented one, to come in and start as QB. It's even tougher to expect them to be successful and excel.
Bailey is not an immediate savior. I watched him get his butt handed to him last Friday night against Grayson. He will be a good QB unless he gets thrown into the fire too early.
