Put This Game Behind Us....

Take a stroll over to the USCjr boards. Full meltdown and they are out on Muschamp. It’s a beautiful thing! I’ll take the win. Ugly for sure, but light years ahead of our performance vs Ga State last year. We gutted one out against an SEC team. Good week coming up to get some things fixed.

Slaughter got used a few times, but had several really good plays. Not having SS for the opener against a very experienced QB hurt us. What really concerned me was our inability to set and hold the edge. It will be interesting to see how many quality snaps Baron got as a result of that.

JG's over throws were awfully consistent, sad to say. OTOH he made a couple of really nice runs.

TE play was better than expected, some very physical blocking. Too bad none of their targets were catchable.

Johnson and Palmer played tough when needed. RK was open a lot, but had a terrible drop.

Banks is in for a tough time in the film room. Two stupid penalties. But, some good pursuit angles a few times, showing some decent speed

All in all, play was overall not as bad as I feared given that a lot of guys played with only 10 or so practices for the whole preseason.

Best news of the night: unlike others these first three weeks, we did not seem to have a bunch of injuries, nor cramping either.
You’re spot on with setting and holding the edge. They’ll get that corrected

Overall, I’m happy. Could’ve been way worse. Watched the game again this morning. The biggest thing that sticks out to me is the lack of pressure by the DLine and consistently getting beat on the slant by Shy Smith. If I were USCjr, I’d ran that slant even more than they did. To’oto’o played really well.

Give me a win, no matter how ugly when opening conference play. This time last year we were opening with a loss to a bad Georgia state team

It amounts to a pre-season game, so there's no need to be concerned just yet.Circumstances aside, I like getting right into the meat of the schedule

Ok, I see tremendous potential in this team but I don’t think it’s by throwing with JG at the helm. If it’s going to be JG then run it 90% of the time with the occasional short pass. I want to see JT get a shot. He should know the offense by now. Great arm and needs a legitimate shot with a few series without worrying about getting pulled. JG would be the perfect backup.

Why why why so pass happy Jim Chaney?!?! Those last two possessions, aside from Ty Chandler, looked sorry as hell.
Because they put 8 men in the box and basically said I dare you to throw. Everyone knows our strengths, so they gamble and try to make Guarantano beat them. Lucky for us he did enough to beat South Carolina.

A friend (major donor and multiple season ticket holder) and I were talking after church this morning. We both agree. The one absolute from that game without fear of contradiction? Henry T is a player!

I thought we would run more two-tight end sets and maybe a few little fullback sets not in short yardage situations. But we did do enough to win. A couple of more completions and the game is well in hand but that's football!

I see Volnation expected Joe Burrow last night.
JG was 19/31 which is better than 60% (which was better than Bo Nix) and no interceptions. imagine if a few more of those receivers caught the balls that hit them in the hands.
Jim Chaney called 30 running plays and 31 passing plays.
Oh yeah we won, so there's that too.

WE WON A TOUGH CLOSE GAME. Cheer up, not much else has gone right this year so drink it up boys and girls.

Exactly. Defenses are going to know our tendency to run and also how bad a passer JG is. They're just playing the best odds. In the least we should try letting other QB's have some playing time.

Thank you. A voice of reason in an otherwise orange colored hell-scape today. Geez, not sure what people were expecting.

I mean, they would have had to drive the field and score a TD for us to lose. Saying that it was a foregone conclusion that SC scores with 1:30 left and no timeouts is a stretch. You can take some lessons and move on. You have to. Fans can dwell on past mistakes, the players and coaches have to learn and move forward.
Look I said before this game I'll take a win no matter how ugly. I hope it was first game rust or whatever you want to call it. But JG, the play calling and secondary (the middle at least, Bryce and Taylor locked down their guys for the most part) were all pretty bad today.

LBs and JG were the weak links which has been my worry all off season with exception of the S&C choice.

Reason secondary had so many tackled is because they could not play their men as tight knowing our LBs would get burned.

Return of Shamburger should help tremendously.

To me the inconsistency of the defense is where the focus needs to be.
They will I think. We were missing some key guys and it was Henry Ts 1st game running the whole defense and getting everyone lined up correctly. They were dominant at times and produced points so I thought they had a decent day all considered.
