Perhaps this is a crazy question but we’ve seemed to struggle a bit this year with punt returns. Is there a reason we don’t try to block more punts?

Its not crazy. I feel like the struggle has been using poor judgement as to when to fair catch or when to run. And more often the poor decision has been to call for the FC which seems unusual for 18-20 year old kids. I think also that Seldon called a fair catch on a kick off that should have been ran out.

In spite of CJH's schemes, which may make people think otherwise, he's a fairly conservative coach. We've been in a lot of close games recently where a punt block could flip the game. But so to could a roughing the kicker. Punt block is a high reward high risk play. He seems to prefer to trust his defense and hope the offense will do enough and/or come around in time. Which it will. Nico continues to grow.

On some of those fair catches, I can understand it. There was some good hang time on those punts where it looked like they had running room. Our PR's had no way to know that the punt team was slow getting down field.

Honestly, I'd rather just let em punt it than get a stupid penalty trying to block it. It wasn't the only reason that we lost, but the running into the kicker penalty in the Arkansas game completely changed the momentum.
That wasn’t really a block attempt if it was it was executed poorly. Ross tried to slow up momentum completely different from attempting to block the punt.

I think that was the coaches telling him to fair catch it no matter what. They didn't want to risk a special teams fumble vs Bama.

I would like to see Boo return punts.

Don’t understand that then. You have to catch the ball either way. That part scares the **** out of me. Outside of that it’s just basically being a running back. But he looks to have given up 12-15 yards.

Roughing the kicker did cost them the Arky Pig game.

It depends on returner and coach's confidence in them. Last year we seemed a lot more confident doing so.
For punt block, I am usually extremely nervous when we try to do so. It is a high risk play and if you do not time it right, it is 15 yards penalty. So I am happy we do no not try to do it more.

He’s definitely been told to not run the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs.

I think he’s being coached to do that.

Squirrel fair caught with 30 yards of grass in front of him. UF or Ark game? McCoy has taken over since.
