I think it is an understatement that everyone is upset with today's loss. But let's slow down with the complete overreaction. I know full well that that's asking a lot from VolNation, though.
There were a lot of mistakes made today and our team will admit that themselves. No one has to point it out for them. But I've been pretty ashamed at some of the reactions that people have had on this forum today.
Our defense was rocking today. Over the span of 60 minutes of football, they held a team to 10 points. TEN. I'm proud of that. We have that area of the game covered right now.
Our offense needs a lot of work. We KNEW coming into this season that both of our lines were going to be brand-spanking-new. This was the THIRD game that our offensive line has played in the lineup that they are in. THREE GAMES. TWO of those linemen, on the right side, are freshmen. They were playing high school football less than a year ago and now they are being asked to block 3, 4, and 5-year SEC veteran defensive players. You have seriously got to cut them some slack. If not, then that's your problem.
I am not an offensive coordinator. I am just a diehard Vol football fan. Yes, there have been times when I questioned Bajakian's playcalling, but that is his job. And it is Butch's job to hold him accountable as well. He's the boss. I DO think it is a little premature to call for his head on a pike before the guy even has a solid offensive lineup to work with. We have our skill positions locked down with plenty of talent. But we have a weak line. Once that line breaks down, it's all over. There's not a lot you have to work with. Plus, the absolute worst thing you could do to this team is to give them a new OC. Sure- let's create some more turmoil in the program since we just now got some staff stability.
There is a lot of big-talk going on around this forum. It's easy for you to say some pretty awful things about our team and our players and our coaches while you hide behind a computer monitor and watch them go to work while you sit on your couch. If you really want to be a man about it, go stand outside the locker room and repeat what you've written here while you're within earshot of the guys that have been up at dawn and in bed at midnight working their asses off. Make sure Emmanuel Moseley hears you, since he used to wake up at 2AM just to scarf down peanut butter sandwiches and milk so he could gain enough wait to be competitive in this league. Make sure Jacob Gilliam hears you- since he tore his ACL in his very first start of his final season and yet still shows up to practice trying to fight his way back onto the field this season.
If you can't stand the thought of not going 10-2 this year, which was as unreasonable now as it was before the season even started, then kindly turn in your fan card and reapply when we start winning all of our games. I've been here though thick and thin and so have many others around here.
It will happen. I'm proud of our young team.
