I've been thinking about getting one for work. Yea, I know what you're thinking. Let me just say line maintenance for aircraft has some downtime occasionally.

I've never had a handheld before. Don't really know much about either. I'd guess the DS is the current handheld champ, but I'm open to either at this point.

I have a first generation PSP and have never updated it because I just use it for ROM's of old Nintendo, Sega, and SNES games. I was lucky enough to get one of the last batches of the old one's back about 4 years ago now I guess. The only thing that sucks is that I can't play the new games on them but I am content having games like Tecmo Super Bowl, Blades of Steel, Mutant League Football, the Super Mario Brother Series, etc. If I want to play new games I just get them for my 360, PS3, or Wii.

My nieces have a DS and they love it. If you had kids you could share it with or would share it with I would bet the DS would be the more popular choice. I love my PSP but for the other reasons listed above. Maybe someone else with both can chime in and give you a better idea.

I have a PSP and it is very versatile where you can watch movies and listen to MP3s on it as well. Also some really good games for adults in Final Fantasy and the Resistance Retribution is a great game. I have never had a DS so I can't really comment on it other than a good friend of mine had one for about 4 months before trading it in for a PSP because it just didn't have a whole lot of good games.

Neither has a great library of original games, but there's certainly a few on each system.

Both can be hacked relatively easy if you're into that (not 100% sure on the 3000 model since I don't keep up with it).

I've owned both. Still have a DS. That's not to say it's much better, but it's just easier to use on trips or when I'm out an about. The PSP has a bit more power and easier web-browsing, etc. Some cool online games. The DS, like everything N, has pretty poor online capabilities.

New DSi is out. Might be able to score a regular DS or DS Lite for a bit cheaper from folks wanting to upgrade?

cough**DealExtreme: $19.32 SuperCard DS-One Multimedia Card (English SDHC Version) ** cough (these make owing a DS a lot cheaper)

i've had a ds for a few years now and its been alright. i don't play it that much as i usually only break it out when i go on trips. other than exclusive titles such as mario and the like, it doesn't have that great of a library, but then again the same can probably be said about the psp. it's still good to have whenever you want to kill some time though

The PSP is definitely more versatile although Sony doesn't really support it all that well and like the good Doctor said, the games library isn't all that great.

Sony sort of struck out with the UMD format, but there's no denying there are plenty of movie titles on UMD, plus there's plenty of software that can convert a ripped movie to a format that works on the PSP and only takes up about a gigabyte of space on a memory stick.

more than likely i'm making a trip today after work to pick up a psp. from what i've seen of the two, the psp seems geared more towards adults, web features and types of games, than the ds which i've always considered more of for kids, once again based on majority of the games available. i'm about a month in on having my ps3 and have really enjoyed it and i'm hoping the psp works as well as the ps3 does. i found myself this weekend sitting around while my daughter was out playing with nothing to do and i figure this is a safe bet. i'll give some impressions of it after playing with it for a few days.

ok so after about a day and a half with the psp, i have this to say. at first play i was really disappointed in the graphics but in all fairness i was playing the ps3 at the same time so to go from 42" down to 4" kinda messed me up. since then i've played some more and am very pleased with the graphics. i feel very confident that i will use it plenty for a long time to come. there are a couple of things though that, although they aren't deal breakers for me, i do wish they were better on. first off, i think the psp is a little lightweight and doesn't feel just all that sturdy and durable but from what i've read it is more durable than it appears. web browsing is incredibly slow and not that user friendly. you don't get a full keyboard as you do with the ps3 but more like a phone when you're texting. game load time is a lot slower than i would have expected but it's not painfully slow. i interested to see how it works with a faster paced game because the only game i've played on it so far is MLB 09 and the frame rate and overall game speed leaves much room for improvement. also i'm not sure about playing online with it yet, i have copied over my psn ID that i set up on the ps3 but it doesn't show friends list or anything like that and i may very well have to link it up with the ps3 or something for full psn or it may not even have it like the ps3 does, i haven't read the book either. i have no experience with a ds to compare this to so take it for what you will.

If you mod it and run games off a memory stick, they are a bit quicker loading.

You can also load up on emulation software for playing old NES, SNES, Sega, etc. games.

I haven't done it, but there's some PS3 games that allow you play them remotely through a PSP via the internet to your PS3. PixelJunk Eden and Lair both allow this. Can be a pain to setup and get working. This also allows streaming of video and audio content from your PS3 to your PSP via the internet.

i've read a little into modding it and haven't really found anything definate and useful for the 3000 model. does anyone have any reliable links? this weekend i plan to see what linking i can do with the ps3 and explore the features a bit more. i tried a youtube video last night just to see how it runs and i have to update this flashplayer and that so i didn't bother with that just yet. i did get the ratchet and clank bundle pack and it came with the movie national treasure 2 and the video playback on that was great.

You have the 3000. I see. Wasn't sure which one you got. I'm not familiar at al with the mod scene on 3000 units. Probably not far off if it isn't happening already.

EDIT: I looked at some sources I use regularly and it appears the 3000 is still unhacked. They have gotten some things to work, but haven't been able to run any games yet or fully expose the kernal as they did with the earlier models. Tidbits trickle in here and there about advances, so it can't be too far away.

i'm starting to wish i had read more into this before i got one now because i went to target and got the only one they had and it was a 2000 model and didn't notice until i got home. when i noticed it i read up a little on the differences between the 2000 and 3000 and supposedly the 3000 is a better model as far resolution i think and i can't remember what else. i got back in the car and took it back and went to gamestop to get the 3000 model not thinking about the hackability that i was losing.

In case anyone was interested in the link I posted above for the DS, I got my new card today. Works perfectly. There were 2 games specifically that I tried for hours and 101 settings to run on my previous setup and it never worked.

This new one, the DS ONE, ran both perfectly. No converting or patching of the games. Just drop 2 software files on your microSD card and all the roms you want and you are good to go. (ie. runs Grand Theft Auto without problems)

For less than $20 you get the DS ONE microSD/microHCSD card for your DS and a microSD usb drive for reading and writing to your micro card. Free shipping, just takes a couple weeks to arrive.

I tried it in a DSi tonight and as expected, they have blocked most of the current hacking/backup/etc. solutions. I've read folks have it cracked now, but I'm just not too update on those.
