hey everyone i have had my ps3 for a few years and a topic got brought up in a different forum about tv cables, etc. and i got no answer in return to my question. so i thought that i could copy and paste to this forum and maybe get an answer. thanks for any and all help.

"well my understanding is that the cables that came with my ps3 were the lower end quality cheap cables. from everyone that i talked to, told me that because i bought a 40 gig ps3 and not the upper and much more expensive models that i did not get the included monster cables that come with those. i am only able to get up to 720p off my ps3 and i have multiple hdtvs that should be giving me 1080p. i have checked all the settings on the ps3 and my tv's and can get nothing higher than 720 for games that should produce up to 1080i and 1080p. the blu ray looks great and clearly looks much better than what the games should look like. so my thoughts are that my cheap cables are not cutting it. so what am i not understanding to get a better picture than what i am?"

Exactly a cheap set of HDMI cables are still better than high end component cables. Also a note. The majority of your retail games are either 720p or at best 1080i which 720p is arguably better. A whole lot of the PSN games are 1080p though.

Here's a summary: Whoever posted that is an idiot. Plain and simple.

If you need help or advice, ask here. There's a few guys that can help. If you want to read a forum where folks know what they are talking about, stick around here and check the AVSForum gaming forums. Lots of us that can pretty much answer most anything you throw out.

With games, HDMI and component cables carry the same signal. Unless you have a bad HDMI or component connection, or the tv processes them differently due to your settings (game mode, etc.) there isn't going to be a difference.

Most every game on disc is pretty much 720p in resolution. When you have a game that supports 1080p, in most cases you have to unselect 720p in your system settings (and most every other resolution except 1080p). At that point, if the game supports it, the game will scale to 1080p by doubling lines or other techniques which your tv also uses.

So, assuming you have a game that supports 1080p:
Obviously there's two scalers you can use. The PS3 or the TV. Which looks better is dependent on a number of factors including your TV. You can try either, but in most cases, you wont see a difference or the PS3 scaling will look a bit worse (we've seen this on a number of games early on).

The problem here is the 360 has a chip onboard that is just a scaler. Final video buffer runs through this as the last step and gets converted to whatever you want. The PS3 does not have this chip and developers have to do the scaling themselves. Developers didn't have the resources/expertise/ability to pull this off for lots of earlier titles. It's much more standard today for devs to include a scaling routine.

If you have a 1080i CRT that doesn't accept 720p, lots of games on the PS3 will be rendered at 480p because they simply cannot convert to 1080i. It appears to many that this is one area Sony dropped the ball and is still struggling with a bit now.
