Anybody watch it? I watched it on YouTube. Pretty standard. Talked about what they needed to do to improve. Whats interesting to me is, he keeps talking about how much they practice these fundamentals yet the players just dont execute. Hmmm. Also, he was asked about Jordan. He said that with him, and any player that hasnt played much, need to basically play better. I like the way he carries himself. Not saying he is great or anything. Just saying I like his attitude. He holds the coaches and players responsible.

These kids...many in their junior and senior year … are just now learning fundamentals and how to process the game mentally. The S&C in years passed has been a joke , that is why their were so many injuries.

There is a reason that junior and senior teams tend to be better than young teams. It is because they have had two or three years to rep fundamentals and build their weight room and football strength. Our guys have not had that coaching.

So when he says that they are working on fundamentals and the players just aren't executing ….its because they can't gain years worth of repletion in a few weeks. Incremental improvement is all that can be expected . Maybe they develop enough to win some November games. It is going to take a complete offseason to see a marked improvement

I like his approach. I don't know if it will help him become a good coach, but I like it.

This defense, which has been decent, would improve drastically with basic form tackling. I get where he is coming from there, the only thing that will make that better is reps.

Does it concern anyone that he always tends to gravitate toward defense? Dont get me wrong, I understand the importance of defense, wins chanpionship etc...but that is only true if your offense is at minimum mildly effective. I think most would agree that defense is not the major issue with this team. So how are we going to fix the o? And what really bothers me there, is that the offense is where all are playmakers are. I think most agree that the defense is full of average players, but they are pretty effective as a unit.
Id like to see how they are going to use chandler, jg, byrd, jj, calloway etc and get the ball away from our inept oline.

Agreed. Hopefully these players will buy into him and the staffs plan.

I believe the vast majority will.
The few who don’t, won’t be around long.
A win win imo. Those who don’t buy in and leave, will open up spots for those who do.......

My only real criticism, knowing our OL situation, is our seemingly lack of creativity to get the ball to guys like chandler and JJ in space, whether it’s play action to TE or roll outs or whatever. Straight drops when DL can just come straight at us is limited in effectiveness.

Yes. If Helton ends up not being the guy, then we need to go after an elite OC like Hugh Freeze or Bobby Petrino after he’s fired this year. If we’re serious about winning then they’ll at least test the waters. If not, one of them ends up at Alabama.

In the practice reports he has been spending most of his time with the offense this week.

I would guess it is the law of primacy. It is more difficult to unlearn the incorrect way to do something than to learn it right the first time.

I seriously doubt Helton is going anywhere anytime soon, I agree with you on Freeze, Petrino, and would throw in Art Briles as great oc, but none would probably ever be hired here because of their baggage. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Helton just yet. I'm curious to see his offense with alittle better suited players but will agree play calls so far has left alot to be desired especially in the first half of pretty much every game, second half they air it out but may be a combination of decent play calls and the game is in hand for the opponents.

poor guy is busy trying to correct deficiencies on both sides...hope his heart holds up to the strain...and,

PS. if he has to do this does he think he's got the right people for the job?

I’d really like to see Jordan Murphy returning kicks. He looks faster than Callaway and is under utilized for his skill set, being quick and catching.

I get it they have baggage, but as a fan base this is something we need to look beyond if we want to be elite again. Other teams will grab up those guys eventually and likely see success. Why not us?

Everybody loves a redemption story, but some are reluctant to take the initial PR hit.

IMO I think Jalen Hurts would like to play for a Freeze, Petrino, or Briles.

Has Josh Palmer become our most productive receiver? On the season Callaway has 231 yards, Palmer 200, Jennings around 140, but I just feel like Palmer is most involved.

i think he's probably the fastest of the WRs, but i don't think he's done enoug consistentl enough to get on the field. so, yeah, why not put a little speed back there fielding kicks/punts?
