"Competitive" is code for "These guys aren't going to be very good so no one should get their hopes up".

I freakin' hate 247's weird, over-stretched and over-sized photos interspersed through an otherwise silly-short article at the rate of one photo every two sentences. It makes the articles almost unreadable.

They need someone who knows how to build web pages, and more someones who know how to write articles of more than 250 words.

Having moaned all that out, my thoughts on the article itself: some really basic leadership there. All correct, but hopefully CJP and crew are at a significantly higher leadership level than that.

Go Vols!

1. Get Stronger
2. Take care of Business off the field (classes, distractions, etc)
3. Take care of your body
4. Stay out of trouble
5. Learn the system inside and out
6. Watch film...a lot
7. Practice the drills learned in Spring Training...especially timing patterns.
8. Mental reps....jk

9. Prepare your teammates
10. Just Win Baby!

Football 101 is do not beat yourself. Play as close to error free football as you can by eliminating penalties and execute the plays as they are coached on both sides of the ball. It is not surprising that teams that routinely do this have success even if their talent is not all that great, Boise State, any of the military academies, and Georgia Tech are just a few examples of this.

This. We won't be good, but I do hope for at least some kind of improvement: like making a bowl game for example.

These work pretty good for me. We have not executed play that resembles the Maxims in a while. Hopefully, Coach Pruitt will transform this group of athletes into a winning, upper SEC level, football team.

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
4. Protect our kickers,our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

One more thing..."gang tackle" does not mean jump on the pile after the whistle and get a 15 yard penalty. If we had avoided half the stupid, inexcusable, fifteen yard penalties for late hits (offense off-sides in the red zone too) we probably would have won a dozen more games in the past 5 years.

AMEN!!! The mental penalties are unexusable,effort penalties I can deal with and understand somewhat. Hopefully that's in the past also.

A lot of you need to listen to number one.

Get over it.

We shouldn't have been 4-8 last year and we shouldn't be 4-8 or 5-7 this year. New team, new coach.

I believe that Pruitt thinks we are going to be a lot more competitive than what he puts on or what other people think. Although he will never say this, we have a lot to be excited about on the defensive side of the ball and he is a defensive guy. Offense will be working on simply moving the chains aka giving our D a rest this season.

Now I am not predicting a 9-10 win season, neither is he, but they will be competing hard in every game this season and he expects to be competitive imo

We have 4 key games:
WVU
FL
SC
MO

2 of those 4 should get us to 7 wins. Hopefully we are back to where the other OC games, Candy, and KY are wins.

this is from a different article, but i found it relevant here, as to what Fulmer and Pruitt have talked about in regards to how to judge where TN is:

“He said, ‘The head coach at Tennessee is going to be judged by three things: Florida, Georgia and Alabama.’ So, where are we at compared (to those schools)? That’s how hard we need to work. And I knew that when I took this job."

That's the best measuring stick for us.

Because if you're using it, all the rest falls into place.
  • Beat all 3? Succeeding. Atlanta for sure, Playoffs next
  • Beat 2 of 3? Very Good, Probably in Atlanta
  • Beat 1 of 3? Not Very Good, Try Harder
  • Beat 0 of 3? Failing
When we have a realistic chance of year-after-year scoring well on that measuring stick, the entire month of November will fall into place naturally.

Now we just gotta get back to it.
