Pruitt still confident in Tennessee's trio of freshman DBs

DB is the absolute worst place to have inexperience on the defense. Their mistakes are magnified with every blown coverage.

Have full confidence they will get better.

The biggest issue from Saturday is only putting 14 on the board against a lousy defense. What are they gonna look like against the UGAs Bamas and Auburns of the world?

Everyone knew WVU would put some points on the board.

True. A good DB no matter their "class" will figure it out. Yes, getting thrown to a firey pit your first game sucks as a Freshman DB but it is great experience.

- Flowers hopefully learned that he can't just guess routes and that he can not be flat footed against any receiver.

- Taylor hopefully just got more experience didn't see to much wrong with his play. Maybe get his head around more.

- Thompson hopefully same as Flowers and Taylor, don't guess the receivers route, just play the receiver and the ball.... Get your head around

I know this guy is not a Freshman but Buchanan was just awful, probably the worst DB on the field, I don't think I've ever watched a corner just let a guy run by him and then realize that he has to follow him.... (Which is what it looked like) I would immediately displace Buchanan from the field if I was coach.

I think any Vol fan that watched that game now understands why CJP spent so much time with the DBs now. It wasn't because he had a special fondness coaching that position group. It's because he knew the talent there was with the young guys and they were going to have to play a lot this year and needed to be coached up as much as possible. I suspect he was a little shocked at how poorly his front 7 played. Grier is a good player, but he's not all that, by the end of the season he won't be near the top of the Heisman chase and WVU will be WVU with about 8 or 9 wins. Again I'm still trying to figure out if we're that bad, they really are all that good, or if something else is in play. The game should have ended a 33/21 WVU win, but we let it turn into a boat race axx whoopin'.

I would assume we will have different offensive play calls this next game. Looked like we were shying away from the pass for some reason. We only had one tightend get the ball and that was a fourth down play in the endzone.

It seems to me that the seasons we struggled in the secondary had a common signature....the DB's played with their back to the QB. Kinda hard to defend against the pass when you don't know the ball is coming.

Thinking makes you slow... Hopefully playing with instincts will come soon!

I really believe that TN is not slow on the back end but rather not confident in what they’re doing and where they’re supposed to be;making us look slower

Said it yesterday and I'll say it today.

DB's were not the problem. Lack of pass rush was the main problem.

Offense needs to do more too.

The scariest part of yesterday's game was that the RB averaged 6 yards per carry, the QB completed 80% of his passes, they had no turnovers and the team committed 6 penalties (dk how many were on offense), and they only scored 14 points.
JG did what they allowed him to do well. Eventually their gonna have to give him more chunk plays down field. His % may suffer but the ypc needs to go up.

I think Chandler going out hurt the overall running numbers. We got very good production from Jordan but nothing outside that. We need 2 backs.
- we botched the entire 1st quarter on O.
- had a solid drive going late in the second quarter that stalled just outside scoring range
- missed on 4th and goal late in the game

This group is not gonna set any school records but it should get better with some time.

Pure talent wise I would say Bamas WRs are better than WVs.

Tua isnt better than Grier. He is just on a much better team.
Tua is not gonna throw it better than Grier even tho he throws it well. He does present an extra problem with his legs running and extending broken plays that Grier doesn't present.

The offenses are very different. Bama's WRs maybe just as talented or more on paper but they re not featured the same way either.

There is a factor of not being comfortable yet and have to second think before reacting. That should improve with time across the board.

I think Jordan is to Chandler what Jennings is to Callaway. I will guarantee that guys in the secondary hate tackling Jordan or Jennings. I like the concept of the physically aggressive setting up the finesse players. I thought the lose of Jennings last year allowed defenses to key on Calloway.

If this offense ever meets its potential it needs that group to get ball IMO. There are others that are plenty good enough to make contributions but those 4 need to be good.

We finally have a staff that isn't opposed to having more than one RB on the field at the same time.

The two TD drives and the last drive looked good. Vols struggled some in the Red Zone but flashed some good things. They had too many drive killer plays that are hard to lay at anyones feet without breaking down a bunch of film and I'm too lazy for that. New offense, tough opening opponent. Let's get it together and hang 70 on ETSU. Won't mean much but will make us all feel better!
