Well...
All I know is that HURD's total yardage and yards per carry far exceeded those of J. Kelly's.....and it wasn't even close.
An inconvenient truth on Volnation fo sho!
Hurds total yardage was higher ONLY because he was Lyles exclusive running back for 2.5 years and got 286 more total touches.
Kelly averaged more yards per carry, more yards per touch, and had a much better touchdowns per carries ratio.
Ill give you that Hurd was perhaps better catching the ball out of the backfield, he had excellent hands and was used more in the passing game....it was the strongest part of Hurds running back skill set and in part explains why he transferred to Baylor to be a WR, not a running back.
Had Kelly gotten as many offensive touches as Hurd, hed have run for more yards and scored more touchdowns, despite the fact that Hurd shared the backfield with an elite running quarterback for the majority of the games he played in.....Kelly had no such luxury last year in his singular season as UTs featured back. Additionally, Kelly also had more splash plays than Hurd, actually had a 50+ yard run. And Id be willing to bet that he broke more tackles as a percentage of his carries than Hurd, despite being a much smaller guy.
For the best and most direct comparison as to their individual effectiveness, look at the 2016 season when both backs got to play with the same exact variables....same OL, same QB, same OC, same idiot head coach. At different times in the season, Hurd at the beginning, Kelly at the end of the season, they each got the majority of carries. (Spoiler alert....Hurd averaged 3.7 yards per carry, while Kelly averaged 6.4, or nearly 3 full yards more per carry).
Here are their career stats at Tennessee...
Hurd-
589 rushes, 2635 yards, 4.5 ypc, 20 rushing tds
656 total touches, 3127, 4.8 avg, 26 total tds
Kelly-
327 rushes, 1573 yards, 4.8 ypc, 15 rushing tds
370 total touches, 1923 yards, 5.2 avg, 15 total tds
