Pruitt: Nobody has ‘separated himself’ in Vols’ QB race

It's hard to say if this is coach speak or not. I sure hope it is. We need someone to take the job outright and be the guy. QB by committee rarely goes well. Of course, we may see all of them this year if the O line isn't improved.

Though it seems like JG has upper hand from all the reports, Pruitt seems to call it like he sees it, and why should he make any pecking order comments if none have truly taken the reins. I think both both QB's will be OK, but am more concerned about comments on pass protection and dropped balls by WR's.

Coach speak.

You really think he's going to come out and say "Bob is crushing it and everyone else is laying giant turds out there"? That would be dumb.

As much as people loved to complain about Butch Jones' coach speak, all coaches do this stuff. A coach that just says every thought that goes through his mind wouldn't be a very good coach. The coach wants everyone working hard.

It's pretty obvious that it's between Chryst and JG if you read between the lines. Shrout is making some good progress, but he's not ready to seriously compete to be the starter. The race between JG & Chryst may not be settled till right before the Florida game. We'll probably learn a lot in the WV game.

I HOPE we only find out about one QB during the WV game...it will mean we're in the game.. I know we're not favored, but if it all comes together, I think we're going to give WVU all they want on opening day. Run the ball and control the clock. Their D isn't really highly touted...but then again, we can't be getting much respect from WVU from our D last year.

I wondered how Pruitt would handle the QB battle.
All that really matters is what players know. I surely hope pruitt doesn’t expect anyone to believe this.
My concern is that Chryst will get an unfair edge because Pruitt’s staff brought him in. If you don’t think that happens, you’re naive as hell.
Someone’s feeling are going to get hurt and it’s better if it’s not the best man for the job.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering but I recall Pruitt saying this decision would be made quickly, or something along those lines.

I'm pretty sure Pruitt will play the QB he truly believes will give them the best chance to win. I'm also pretty sure he promised Chryst nothing but the chance to compete for the starting spot.

No point in naming one yet. Let them keep giving their best efforts and pushing each other until the season starts. I think JG is going to be the guy, but then again maybe Chryst needs another week or so to get comfortable and he will take the reigns. Either way, I feel we will actually look more like a real football team this year.

I believe Pruitt wants to wait as he wants people competing all the way through camp. I think the words about being the best at your position instead of worrying about being named the starter is the important part of his press conference. If he doesn’t have one named by the final week I think you will see both play.

Agree with most of this except I think JG is ahead at this point

Two different likely scenerio's: (1) One q.b. starts the WVU game but loses his starting job after the Florida game OR (2) Both q.b.'s get playing time for the first two games, and then one is named the starter for the Florida game and he keeps his job.

I don't see a q.b. being named the starter against WVU and keeping his job the entire season.

Lies lies all lies I tell ya...lol...He's simply trying to keep it competitive, makes sense. Although I wish a reporter would call to memory when he said the decision would be made quickly, just to see what he says.

Same words every year from every football coach who doesn’t have a Peyton Manning returning. I believe bringing in Chryst was a good move for the sake of depth and competition. CJP will start the WV game with the guy he hopes will take it and run, or throw, with it. If the first guy starts regressing to interceptions and incompletions, sacks and indecision, next best QB will enter the game.
