Pruitt: A four quarterback derby.

I agree. Lack of strength and conditioning could also be a big part as well as motivation. I think with improved coaching and strength and conditioning, as well as more hunger in the locker room with our new recruits, we could definitely see an improvement. If Helton gets our offense going, and we start winning time of possession it will only help our defense as well. Our team was 103 in the country in this last year and it wasn't because our offense scored quick.

Absolutely agree. I also just looked it up too and saw that #103 ranking in time of possession. That would put a strain on a great defense. I don't know which side of the ball coaching staff was worse at making adjustments. Our final 9 games after Florida we were outscored 135-40, with 7 of those Being a defensive TD. 4 of those 9 we didn't score a single 2nd half point. Some of that is on the players but horrible 2nd half adjustments offensively and defensively played a huge part too_Outside of Ga and Ala, we were in every game at halftime.

Exactly, and if you look at the alabama game, we were down 7 to nothing at the end of the first, and held them to 14 until a couple minutes before the half so that really isn't that bad either.

You're right, we were atleast keeping it respectable then the adjustments that separates good coach's from the bad happened.

I don't think our roster is as bad as it appears but it's hard to get a gauge with that horrid coaching staff. Half of our roster 40+ were *4 or *5 on atleast one of the services. Hoping our luck isn't that bad to where that many were misevaluated. But with our luck since Fulmer nothing would surprise me. Our coaching strength is on defense and that's with a really good offensive staff too. Just speaks to what level coach's we have on D. Easily a top 3-5 Defensive staff including JP. Coaching makes a huge difference and can close whatever weakness gaps there are. Not saying great but well beyond just serviceable. TCU and Va Tech typically always have top 10-20 Defense's and don't get near the highly rated players we've got. Coaching makes all the difference in the world. End of the day, it's hard to know what this roster can do now that they're getting coached up. But atleast right now I can't be convinced we have that many *4 and *5 busts. If that's our luck then we need to bring in Exorcists, Mediums,Priests and whoever else, to break the worst Ju-Ju ever seen. I can't wait to find out either way.

4* or 5* players that have had crappy strength & conditioning and position coaching for 2 to 3 years no longer have the same college level ceiling that they would have had were they to have received great coaching and a great strength and conditioning program for those years. Their long term potential is probably still the same. However, they will not reach the same ceiling during their college career. Way too many Vol fans are hanging their hopes on recruiting rankings over the last 4 years. The potential of those players during their college careers has been squandered as a result of incompetent coaching. Those recruiting rankings are largely worthless at this point.

I'm not sure I buy into that. Take Jonathan Crompton for example. He went through numerous and not very good coaching changes and he looked horrible during it. In comes Kiffin and he has a really productive SR yr and lead the conference in TD passes. There's too many examples of 1st year turnarounds with new Coach's. That doesn't happen if a few bad coaching years ruined them from getting coached up in the future. I've never seen anything support or prove that development theory. It may have gotten them in some bad habits or even lazy under bad coaching but it's not going to prevent them from ever reaching their potential because of it. Too many 1 yr team turnarounds and players developing under new Coach's after not from their previous Coach's. It will not hurt their strength conditioning future either. It's not like a new and much better strength conditioning coach can't fix bad habits or previous bad strength training. Those were 2 very incorrect assessments. Not sure where you got that info, but I wouldn't ever go there again to get anymore. Really 2 of the most absurd things I have heard in a very long time.

You must be trying hard in order to miss the point on strength and conditioning.

Take an athlete and have him work in a great strength and conditioning program for 4 years.

Take that same athlete and have him work in a crappy strength and conditioning program for 3 years. Then give him the same great strength and conditioning program for year 4.

Under which scenario is the athlete stronger and in better condition during his 4th season? Only an idiot can miss the answer.

I agree with that. But there is no denying that even the second athlete can improve whether it is drastically or not if he puts the work in. The amount of improvement depends on the situation and athlete.

This is as idiotic of a post as I've seen. Our strength and conditioning may not have been what is should have been, but don't get it twisted they are still in great shape. It's not like they were training with an inexperienced or not licensed trainer.I doubt it was improper training that was the issue and Fitz would have to work from the bottom up. Who knows what the actual problem was but I guarantee it wasn't from improper training that would take longer to fix. So it's not like it would take yrs to get them where they should be. It's not like they are trying to transform an out of shape person off the street and have him ready in 9 months. It's physical specimens who have still been at an elite schools strength program and been properly fed,all the proteins and supplements plus everything else they would ever need. Throw in the fact we have 53 scholarship players who are RS sophomores or younger. So even if your theory had any merit, which it doesn't then we have 65+% not harmed by that plus another 10+ who were at other schools or JUCO's. So that's 63-65 of our 85 scholarship players not hurt by it. So no, the players are not unable to be properly developed in the strength program.

One last point is JUCO players, who have been in average at best strength programs. They don't get fed right or even what our current players previously had, but it hasn't ruined all their career's. Your post only would have merit if they were given harmful or improper training. Or by some unlicensed Strength Coach, who trains out of his Mom's basement with prison type equipment. Which to my knowledge ,even Butch never made that type of hire. Even Fulmer recently said you can see a huge difference already but aren't there yet. When it's the 4 Strength Coach for the SR's it could cause problems that aren't necessarily physical. The mental part and not having the toughness trained into them. But it's all fixable.

Exactly. The players aren't permanently unable to be developed like the posters claim. Especially with 65+% of the players being RS Soh or younger plus the 10+ JUCO and Grad Transfers who haven't been here. Of course they wouldn't be at the level in 9 months that they would be had Pfitz been here for yrs. But like I said it wasn't like they were getting free training from some untrained guy out of his basement. They players may not have been pushed or held accountable enough but it wasn't from improper or harmful training.

If you don’t realize that the strength and conditioning program at UT has been broken for years, then you are in denial. I said previously that only an idiot couldn’t understand the point I was making. Thank you for proving my point.

Dude I didn't say it wasn't broken, you don't go through 4 Strength Coach's in 4-5 if it was good. I'm just saying it's not unfixable nor are the players undevelopable. It won't be fixed overnight but it is definitely fixable.

Then you either misinterpreted my original post, or twisted it in order to argue against something I never said. This is what I said in my originsl post. They will definitely improve under the new regime. However, players that are deep into their college careers already will not reach the same peak during their college career that they would have achieved had they been in Pruitt’s program their entire college career.

That's exactly what I said. I'm saying with that many Soph and Fr players they all can reach their ceiling. I may can see a Sr not able to but everyone else definitely could. Plus there is no way to determine each player's ceiling. Hello a lot of guys peak in HS and never develop anymore. But as I previously said none of these players are in bad condition. They just need to get pushed and developed to the next level. These aren't bad body fata$$es who sit on the couch watching TV and eating. They strength train year around. No they won't get to where they would have Ben this yr of Fitz had been here 3 yrs but he can get them in winning games shape. We will be in better shape than either of Butch's 9 win teams. We won't be able to bang it out and be physical with Ga,Ala or Aub but we will be much bigger and stronger than previous yrs. Plus it's not like the Strength Coach's we've had haven't worked with NFL teams and numerous power 5 schools. So it's not all bad training or conditioning. It's gotta be numerous other factors than just the strength program Butch wanted. Whatever it was on sure it's getting fixed.

Strength and conditioning can be improved in one year. Will they be at the level that someone else who had been at it for four years, no of course not. But even just getting better cardio could have helped this team last year as they were noticeably winded as the games went on. That can be improved rapidly before the season and as the season progresses.

It goes to his account, not sure why it keeps saying "Not Found"

But apparently, he's doing all sorts of things, I saw realtor, QB instructor, and this:

Good points here, look at Allen heck his body transformation just in a few months after getting to our program after being in a JUCO program was insane. Kid put on tons of muscle. You can shape an athlete's body in under a year that's not the hard part.

Technique and fundamentals are the hard part because a kid has to be willing to forget his old ways and take on the "right" way and that is not always easy for some guys. That is the stuff that is hard to fix in years.
