Price Per Win in College Football

This chart doesn't mean a lot at the lower-price end. Where it's telling is at the expensive side. Mullen and Freeze are exposed ... as are D'Antonio and Ash in the B10 (Harbaugh* too, but plenty of people will gush on how he's one of the best, just hasn't quite delivered yet) ... and Mendenhall in Virginia ... Strong in Texas (but he gone) ... and a few in the PAC.

* Saw something that made it look like Harbaugh's pay is down to the mere mortal level of $5M/year from here on, that the first year's $9M rate included a one-off $4M loan guarantee or some such. Which would, of course, take Harbaugh off the expensive end of these charts.

But as the author noted, there are anomaly seasons, and I think both Mullens and Dantonio had one in 2016. Overall though, I would say both have delivered a lot of bang for the bucks they were paid, especially considering both coach programs that are traditionally tough sells to recruits. They both do a very good job of coaching up what they do recruit.

This makes Saban look like a great value. Relatively speaking, Butch not so much.

Nick Saban is vastly underpaid by any measure. Price per win just scratches the surface on how underpaid he is.

The man is not only responsible for the elevation of the football program but the elevation of the entire university and the Alabama brand.

Since he's been HC and they started winning, donations and enrollment have exploded; I read somewhere that something like one-third of incoming freshmen are from out of state. His impact has affected their entire university system. The ~$8M they pay him per year is peanuts.

Makes Harbaugh look like a bad value. Won 10 games and still 900,000 dollars a win which sandwiched him between two coaches who only won 3 games. Saban won more games and still was overy 300,000 dollars less per win.

What about deducting $100K from the HC's salary for losing to teams they're not supposed to lose to, call it a subpar performance bonus. :hmm:

I really don't know what to make of this article/ list. Saban whose team is 13-0 is still at $500+K per win. Yes, the SEC is more expensive/ per win but they pay their coaches more so it's going to be that way for the foreseeable future.

Who decides what teams they are not supposed to lose to?

Let Butch announce them each year, so we can get on the same page. Yes, Vandy is at the top of the list.

Some will be toss ups while others are can't loose without a big fine. Forced donation of $1 mil. and $1mil bonus for each toss up win.
When Butch leaves, whatever he is getting paid, should be the starting contract for the next guy. No need to go backwards.

Just let me be in charge of it. It is different than simply not losing when you are favored. For example we might be favored against Georgia the week before the game next year but we aren't necessarily "supposed" to beat them; that matchup over the years has been competitive. They are teams that under basically no circumstance you should be losing to. Next year's list of teams would be:

Indiana St
UMass
South Carolina
Kentucky
Southern Miss
Missouri
Vanderbilt

Throw in Ga Tech and we are on the same page.

Georgia Tech is right on the margin. I struggled with putting them in there. That would be a really, really bad loss but perhaps just short of "inexcusable."

Got to raise the standard. We are not coached by Dooley any more. If they were on the rise and we were on the decline we should still win, they are inferior.

Take their soul Vols!
