Im watching ESPN last night and they show clips of LSU, Florida, Georgia, and Auburn as contenders for the SEC. They didn't even show Tennessee in a clip getting burnt on defense. ESPN analyst this year have treated the Vols as if they don't exist. Instead of showing anyone in the East they should be showing the team that won the East last year. I was so pissed off last night and I had to make a post this morning.

If this doesn't send the message to the players that its them against the world, then nothing can. They HAVE to go out and smack every team in the mouth in the SEC this year. Respect is what they are playing for this year, not a championship. Tennessee football has become a joke the last 5 years. I for one am sick of it. Hopefully the players get the same message.

Fulmer was on ESPN a week or two ago.

Tennessee has to earn its respect back. We have done nothing the past couple of years to get any respect. When we get a SEC title then we will be back on the radar.

Were not going to get respect this year unless we beat Florida, UGA, and Auburn. Simple as that.

Even two out three would't be bad. 1-2 proves them right. 0-3 we should all just shut up until we have a new coach.

Just because analysts call it like they see it doesn't mean they've lost respect...

Honestly...if I weren't a UT fan I wouldn't give us much chance either...there's too many questions and the UGA's and UF's of the league look too good on paper...

Keep in mind that before the LSU game in 2006 Kirk Herbstreit called is the best 1 loss team in the country at that point and most of the other analysts agreed....So it's not like we are light years removed from a time when we were "respected" by the media...

We need to win the big ones....win when it counts against this years media darlin' teams like UF, UGA, Auburn and the "respect" thing will take care of itself (quote: jakez4ut)

Beat UCLA soundly, 14 or more, come back and rout UAB 21+, then beat Florida...everyone will be wearing orange and touting the 08 VOLS as second coming of 98 VOLS.

Florida is the key. If we lose to the gators we will need to win out against Auburn, Georgia (tough to do, but by no means impossible) and whip bama...then the respect will again return.

Respect comes on the field first.

As I have said before, the VOLS need to return to smash mouth football, no quarter given and none expected...I saw definite glimpses of this against Wisconsin last year.

GO VOLS beat the group across from you each week and let the pundits sort out the rankings.

I believe that there were 4 keys to the success of the 98' Championship team:

You have mentioned one-
1. They were able to focus on one team at a time (remember the ladder with the name of each opponent as a rung).

2. The second key was great leadership and chemistry.

3. The team stayed relatively healthy, and/or had really good backups in the areas where the lost good players.

4 Finally, they found Lady Luck when they needed her most(all championship teams do).

Three of these keys are under the team's control to some extent...the fourth is not.

The Vols need to maintain 30+ ppg scoring average. Smashmouth on defense would be good as long as it results in stopping the run. UTK was not even in the Top 50 nationally for total defense last season. The DBs are going to have to live up to the fans' expectations, and I'm speaking primarily about the CBs and Morely since we all know Berry is outstanding. Also, the front seven will have to be better than it has been since 2005. We got "change" because Cut left, but truth be told it is the defense that has cost the Vols wins the past couple of seasons.

A lot of people feel this way, but I just don't get it. I must really be bias. I look at how we finished last year and with what we have returning and I think we will be a very good team this year. I think we look good on paper. I just can't see FL and UGA that much ahead of us. Okay, I guess I have to give FL the edge, but definitely not UGA. The beating that FL put on us still stings. Athough, I really don't think FL was playing that much better than we were at the end of last year. They definitely were at the beginning however.

Of course you are baised, as you should be. If I was not so disgusted with the lost opportunities post-98, I'd probably still be a raving homer myself fervently believing that UTK can line up and beat any team in the nation. Once your fan craziness wears off though, you start looking and things more objectively and objectively speaking the Vols are somewhere between the fifth and seventh best team in the conference right now.

Ouch, that sounds brutal. I would gauge us fifth right now, depending on how Bama does.

10-2 at the worst and maybe a chance at a bcs bowl. i think its probable that we lose 1 of 2 to florida and auburn. auburn has scared me for the past 10 years or so. we never seem to get any offense going against them. we can beat florida, the players HAVE to want it. the other loss is coming from georgia/south carolina i think. the problem is that we HAVE to beat florida or georgia to be in any kind of position to make a run at the sec. im very excited and cant wait for it to play out

i agree, there is no respect out there for UT. you have to earn it and right now we are on the bottom of the list. when you don't win the sec in 10 years what do you expect.

If we had a returning starting QB and a returning OC, we'd be in the top 10 in the country preseason.
