Mays & Pierce 1st team
Sampson & White 3rd team.

I continue to be confused why Thomas hasn’t been showing up on any of the preseason lists. I was surprised he came back thinking he would enter the draft. What am I missing as it seems like he’s a force as a DT to me?
He’s our guy so I am all for him. As someone watching the games objectively and paying specific attention to interior DL play, he is a head scratcher. Very inconsistent and mostly wins off sheer physical superiority. He is a freak athlete with a great first step. He wasn’t draft able because his technique was bad especially against the run. His first step is quick but he cocks his hands and gives up his chest too often. Teams figured out they could double him and he would get us in a terrible spot. Florida did this to us repeatedly. He would line up in a 1 and end up outside the tackle. He has the tools to be elite, but he is not technically sound enough yet. He is a gap shooter. That does not work well anymore. If he can put it together, he is a first rounder. He was told all of this during the offseason and by scouts/evaluators, so hopefully he fixes it and we see him live up to his potential.

South Carolina with 5 to our 4? Nuts.

I was spoiled watching CJ Stroud last year. Hopefully Nico can justify my comparison of his play to Stroud’s. Both have an advantage in that they play for innovative minds.
I hope Nico has similar numbers as Stroud's 2022 & 2023 numbers , over the next two years , especially completion percentage and TD-INT ratio . Dude took care of the ball.

I don’t know enough about the technical skills of playing D tackle but CRG does. It’s very surprising OT would still be technically unsound after 3+ seasons under CRG’s guidance? Not saying your wrong, I’m just surprised by this.

CRG hasn’t given up on him and they are still working to fix them I’m sure. That’s why he still gets a lot of play. He has so much talent and physical ability. 6-4 320 doesn’t love like he does very often and he plays really hard. OT is a day one talent, he just has some flaws which are needing to be to fixed. Some guys take longer than others to get their craft right. I’m glad he came back to work with CRG another year. It is fixable and he has the best coach in the country working with him.

But, a lot of stuff on the draft sites mention this, and a friend of mine who coaches at another P5 who we played mentioned this when we talked about UT’s DL play. OT is a playmaker; he just needs to tighten some stuff up. He lets the OL get hands on him first and doesn’t clean them off very well. He could be an AA player for us.
