Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

I get the rationale for letting him go but it’s more about changing the culture at the club than immediately winning another trophy for me. The hierarchy at Tottenham is more concerned with making money than anything that happens on the pitch and it’s been that way for years.

Ange understands the type of blue collar, gritty mentality it takes to win trophies. Daniel Levy has probably never done any sort of manual labor in his life. I just wanted Ange to continue for another year or two so that maybe his attitude would rub off on Levy and the club and he/they would realize that winning trophies generates more revenue, paints your club in a better light, and attracts more talent than finishing 4th and qualifying for the Champions League.
He operates like a lot of owners of American professional sports teams do. In European soccer, there's more of a correlation between financial success and winning - you'd think he'd understand that.

In American professional sports, all you really need to do is own a team. They can't kick you out of the league, there's revenue sharing, worst team gets the first (or has the best chance at getting the first) draft pick.

He’s grown the club a lot financially since ENIC took over ~25ish years ago and a lot of Tottenham fans are grateful for that. We’ve consistently finished in European spots (last season notwithstanding) for the last 15 or so years. But if you look back at the history of the club, even when we were a mid table side we still managed to win a cup once or twice a decade.

I think a lot of Tottenham fans are frustrated because they feel that ENIC: 1.) Care absolutely nothing about winning trophies on the pitch as long as they remain profitable and near the top of the table; 2.) They are incapable of making smart player investments in the transfer market simply because those making decisions in that department are severely lacking in football knowledge (sort of like an NFL team that consistently drafts poorly because the business side of the organization is too involved in the sporting side); and 3.) Our wage structure is noticeably lower than the rest of the “Big 6” even though we can definitely afford to pay our players more (I think our wages as a percentage of our revenue is the lowest, or one of the lowest, in the Premier League).

I felt like Ange was at least helping fix 1 and 2 on that list during his time here. And yeah we finished 17th in the league. But what Tottenham fan actually cares about that?? We were never truly in danger of going down and the players/fans/manager were well aware of that. After our injury crisis which forced us to play an 18 year old midfielder as a CB for 4 months of the season (among other things), I don’t blame Ange and the players for mailing in the league games and trying to focus on Europe. That European trophy will be remembered for a lot longer than the 17th place finish. And that’s just what Levy doesn’t understand.

I will say I’ve always been a fan of his at Brentford. I hope he does well here. I definitely thought he was the best of the realistic options for a replacement.
I like him too. I just hope it’s not a Graham Potter move for him. Good manager, well respected, and can build a team.. but has never been a manager at a club of this size. Spurs fans will eat him alive if he can’t get the team up to speed quick enough.

I hope so too. The fans are probably satisfied enough with the Europa League trophy that a slow start wouldn’t kill his time here. I’ve always admired how flexible he is with his tactics and his ability to create teams that are more than the sum of their parts.

Interesting graph here. Didn’t realize the top teams were that far removed from even the middle of the pack in the PL. No wonder the Big Six wanted to break away and lock themselves into the CL permanently. MASSIVE drop off even to the Europa and Conference League teams.

Also pretty easy to see why Wrexham are likely about to hit their heads on the ceiling. They’ve been bringing in money (and likely spending) like a Championship club. Will be interesting to see how they do against competition that has comparable financial backing.

Kind of wild how Man United still brings in more than Liverpool.

Went to the Chelsea vs LAFC game on Monday in Atlanta. Great time. Bit of egg on the face for FIFA expecting a big turnout on a Monday at 3 PM. Attendance wasn’t great and it felt like a preseason friendly for the most part. I’m sure the games later in the tournament outside of the group stages, or games on the weekend, will be better attended. I had a great time still.

Did not know UT was developing turfs for 2026 World Cup pitches…

Reminds me that I wanted to see if there was any talk after the Chelsea game about pitch. From the stands the pitch actually looked great and UT nailed it. I did see a little bit of slipping at times but they were also situations where even on a natural outside pitch they still would have slipped. Like Neto on his goal he had where he slipped while shooting.
