I know the recruiting concept is different but the end result is the same (assuming the preferred walkon earns a scholarship). Would it be fair to say these terms are equivalent?

no. preferred walkons dont always get a scholarship. a blueshirt goes on scholarship basically as soon as they get on campus, and they count against the following years class.

Only difference (and it's a big one) is that a blue shirt counts as an initial qualifier in the next class. A preferred walk-on likely earns a scholarship later and doesn't ever count as an initial qualifier. I'm not sure how long a walk-on has to be on campus to avoid the initial qualifier status.

a walk on is someone that wasnt recruited and has to try out. basically someone that is already enrolled in school that the coaches didnt know about. a preferred walk on is recruited and offered a spot on the team and treated just like a scholarship player (with no expenses paid for)

Scholarship players used get extra benefits but unfortunately those benefits left with the former Head of Student Judicial Services.
