Prefer a defensive or offensive minded coach?

Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, and Pete Carroll were all defensive backs in college. I've always thought an ex-college QB like Spurrier would make the best coach but those 3 made me rethink that.

Jeff Fisher was also a defensive back.

I think Cut pretty much takes credit for the very conservative playcalling after half and the ensuing loss of all momentum

You may be right, but I was listening to the call in show the next morning and they were playing an interview of Cut. They asked him something like, if it was Fulmer that took over play calling in the 3rd quarter and he said yes Fulmer did. Then he talked about how the run opens up the pass and that it was the right thing to do anyway. I could be wrong, but I got the impression that we would have a Fulmer-Chavis Arky State moment, if Cut was on the sideline.

If I had to choose, defensive, simply because that's how Bear Bryant won (unless he played ND):).

I'm with GAVol on this one. Matters not. If we get an offensive minded coach I want a fierce, balls to the wall defensive coordinator to go with him.

Seriously, good defense turns me on. I get the vapors.

I could not agree more.

 at "the vapors"

How about a coach who is feared by his opponents rather than looked at as a weakness. I truly believe that less talented teams believe they have an edge when they play UT b/c they feel they can out-coach us to the tune of about 3-7 points in a game. Deep down I think I believe it too and that's sad. That being said, I would like to have an innovative, pedal to the metal, offensive minded coach that can put players in the pro game. That's what truly brings the big recruits.

With the way all of the poll voters look at the games now, you need to put up 40 to 50 points, and only give up 10 to be seen as a #1 contender.

Yeah...those high octane PAC 10 offenses really bring in the national championships...from what I can gather, our problem isnt recruiting...its coaching those recruits...I dont care if an offensive or defensive minded coach comes in...as long as he hires a grade A Coordinator to handle the other side (ala Spurrier and Stoops).

ANd, no matter which coach we hire, Id like to see that coach be the Coordinator of one or the other...that way it will free up a coaching position to hire a FT Special teams coach

For you guys who want an offensive guru - be careful what you wish for!

Take my local UofL Cardinals for example. They are scary good on offense, but couldn't stop a ten-year-old on defense. It has cost them NC hopes, and probably Big East hopes as well.

Yes, they have been extremely exciting to watch for the last couple of years with their high-octane offense and I'm sure that has attracted some new recruits.

But it's one thing to put a lot of points on the board, it's another to actually seal the deal, win games, and titles.

I'd rather be like LSU is now - a stifling defense that no one wants to play.:rock2:

If you had NC hopes based upon the preseason garbage being bandied about, then you're a true homer. Once the UL team played a game, you should have immediately known that there were no NC hopes. IMO, there haven't been any real NC hope in the past either, based upon very weak schedule and general lack of D (although there were a couple of defensive studs in there)

If you can't score buckets of points, you better hope you are 1 of 2 undefeated teams. If there are 3, you won't be playing for a NC.
this is not true. relative strength of schedule and victory margin are more important than points scored. Of the two, SOS weighs most heavily.

UF got an invite last year with one loss and an amazingly inconsistent offense.

My dad always told me "Your Offense will win you some games but your defense will win your championships..." I mean look at the colts last year, they had all the offense in the world, however for them to make it through the playoffs and beat the pats and then the bears, their defense had to step up to the plate. plain and simple. however i do believe the team does need a decent offense as well, i mean look at the bears, their defense took them to the superbowl, and rex grossman did the usual FLA QB in the pros and sucked it up,,,

UF has Urban Meyer, and ESPN worships him.

Lets face it, ESPN controls everything in college football. If you are a good offensive team, or have a beloved coach, you get talked about being worthy of a NC berth. The voters seem to not be able to make their own minds up. Just like the voters who wanted to vote a D-2 team into a D-1 poll, that shows the amount of intelligence that group of writers have.

You people make me sick with the defense stuff, what next, join the big 10?

The last thing I want to watch is a strictly defensive UT team get down to another team and have no shot of a come back!

We need to become Miami like!

Great offensive mind would be best. A good d-coordinator can be hired. UT should be looking at the staffs of Florida, Oklahoma or USC.

BULLSEYE!!! ANy team that has to squeak by a team after scoring 58 has no business being mentioned as a MNC contender.

Don't get down, play good defense. :)
