Guys, I see no reason why we can't have the number one defense in the nation next season as long as Orgeron gets the d-line to play. I think Montario Hughes will shock many people on the line this season. That kid is a five star prospect in my eyes.

We will have the deepest and most shut down secondary by far in the nation, especially with the additions of Jackson and Myles. Morely seems to be out of the dog house. Our linebacker talent is way underrated. Will be interesting to see how fast Askew will contribute.

If we get good d-line play, then this will be the best D in the country hands down. Now we just need a productive running game to return to UT football.

Somewhere between top 10-20 IMO. Still lacking some talent, and the LB crew will inexperienced. Watch out the next couple of years though.

I will say in the top 3 of the conference since that is really all that matters.

1. UF
2. Bama
3. UT

I agree with you, maybe #2. I read an article this morning where the UGA offense has been dominating the UGA defense. I would love this, b/c I know our D can stop there O which would give us a great chance to beat them.

No it won't.

Florida is going to be pretty damn good on D. They return 11 starters remember?

Our D is going to be fine/great. I would think that with the better coaching staff as well as a few key freshman we should see some serious improvement.
Last year we had a D that was worthy of winning the SEC but they couldn't get off the field. When you look at what is leaving/left last years team we shouldn't have to much trouble replacing those players.
As I have said before I have a feeling we might surprise a few people this year because the talent has always been on the sidelines it just hasn't been coached up! However, I still feel Florida is head and shoulders better than we are right now. If we give this coaching staff another year or two to coach and recruit we will have something special.

I think our D will be solid this year. As it turns out, I think there are more question marks at LB than DL. Our secondary is going to be awesome. #1 D in the nation is unlikely. I think we could be in the top 10 however.

I don't see how we're going to regularly stop the run. That's a tremendous problem.

Teams that line up and pound Tennessee between the tackles will give them trouble.

Teams that try to use speed and get to the corner will not have much success against Tennessee.

We can be as good. I really think Chavis' prevent style defense actually held the talent that we had back a good bit last year. We had great take away corners that were essentially placed out of action to prevent bombs most of the time when they were on the field yet Berry still posted monster numbers. I don't think people on here realize just how much better Monte and Orgeron will make this defense than Chavis and his staff. This D will be better IMO than last year despite some major losses.

Also, despite a less talented line, I believe we will get more of a consistent pass rush. You know an Orgeron coached defensive line will get some consistent pressure. Considering Ayers' talent, why wasn't he more of a force last year?

Fla's D will be great, but we can be as good. Like others have said, the question mark will be our interior line play and how quick our young linebackers pick things up.

Either way, at leadst our offense should be improved enough to actually keep them off the field a little.

We will be good. I can't say we will equal last years D. Didn't we finish ranked 5th?

I think our staff is much better this year, but to expect the D to finish ranked better than 5th in the nation is asking a lot.

I will say we will be top 15 and hopefully (quite possibly) top 10. Anything 5th or better would be awesome and definitely possible, but I am not going to hold my breath.

i would gladly have a defense that gives up 100-150 yds on the ground a game with 2 fumble recoveries a game, over a D that gives up 50 yds on the ground a game with no fumble recoveries.

I'm looking at a top 10 D. I think we may lead the nation in takeaways this year though.

Having a top 10 defense should be a lock. The only thing that worries me would be stopping the run. In the Monte 2 defense, emphasis is put on pass rush from the ends. I believe many offenses will have to double team either one of our ends, thus freeing up our tackles. If the tackles can be consistent, I can see this defense being ranked in the top 3. The secondary we have in Berry, Morley, Jackson, Vinson, Myles, Rogan, Waggner, and Johnson, I think teams will be hesitant to throw on us. That being said, I think more attention by our staff can be put on stopping the run as our secondary is loaded with playmakers.

Top 15-20 defense we will give up yardage for turnovers, thats the way monte's defense works. For it to work we have to have very discplined defenders, we shouldn't have a problem with that by the fall. Linebackers look a little inexperienced, and if reveiz starts we will be a little less athletic, but if our d-line can perform all the linebackers have to do is get to the ball so it really comes down to our d-line play, which I think is improving considerably.

Every team we play is going to do their best to pound it down our throats. They will line up and run between the tackles all day long. Outside of Dan Williams, we really just don't have much on the d-line. I am very concerned about this area of our team. If we can't stop the run consistently, we will be in deep trouble.
