What would you say to the our team in the locker room before the game? How would you motivate the team?

I would probably ride in on my horse and say something like this----

"I am PF. And I see a whole army of my countrymen,
here in defiance of tyranny! You have come to fight as free men. And
free man you are! What will you do without freedom? Will you fight?"
"Two thousand against ten?" - the veteran shouted. "No! We will
run - and live!"
"Yes!" Fulmer shouted back. "Fight and you may die. Run and you
will live at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now,
would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for
one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell
our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take
our freedom!"

I was really surprised how good Fulmer was at giving the speeches. If I were him, I'd probably use some stuff from my other speeches, something like:

"The eyes of the entire nation are on you tonight. Gentlemen, it doesn't get any better than this. This is why you came to the SEC, why you came to Tennessee. The team you're about to play is trying to make a statement. They think they're good enough to play with the big boys. They will show you no respect, you've got to earn it. Prove to them that you're stronger. Prove to them that you're faster. Prove to them that you're smarter. From the first play of the game to the last play of the game. I want everyone to see what Tennessee football is all about. Let's go gentlemen."

FULMER:
Well, boys ... I haven't a thing to say.
Played a great pre-game...all of you. Great pre-game.
(He tries to smile.)
I guess we just can't expect to win ‘em all.
(Fulmer pauses and says quietly.)
I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years --
None of you ever knew General Neyland.
It was long before your time.
But you know what a tradition he is at Tennessee...
(There is gentle, faraway look in his eyes as he recalls the General’s words.)
And the last thing he said to me -- "Phillip," he said -
"sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the
breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there
with all they got and win just one for the General...
(Fulmer’s eyes become misty and his voice is unsteady as he finishes.)
I don't know where I'll be then, Phillip", he said - "but
I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

The little guy doing all of the talking in the middle of the lockeroom, not Tedford, did nothing but curse. Does anyone that watched this clip remember anything he said besides %$#*!!%$##$^&**&&^%@!!#$%%. Anybody can stand up and say 50 curse words. Fulmer's speeches were much more inspiring and motivating. It was funny watching the little Cal player trying to get everybody pumped and no one seemed to join in. He started jumping up and down, trying to get everyone to join him and no one did. Maybe they had trouble understanding what he was saying with all of the cursing.

Fulmer:
"Alright Boys repeat after me;

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE. 3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam. -

4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.

5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.

7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

"Again"

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE. 3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam. -

You get the picture!

"This is a battle of good vs. evil. Two different cultures are at war tonight, and you have the opportunity to win it. The South will rise tonight in the hills of California. You've got a heckuva opportunity to represent everything that is good about this country against these tree-huggers. This is why you came here. This is your job, and gosh-darnit what a good opportunity you have. Game maxims, everybody together."

"In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be *the actual* El Guapo! " :neener2:

Gentleman...

Tonight, you're playing for the pride of the University of Tennessee, the entire state of Tennessee, your teammates in this room and all the great players who wore the orange before you...You're walking out onto the field against a team you physically manhandled last year...you were stronger, you were faster, and you were better - 35 unanswered points better, to be exact. And despite all that, the experts and the oddsmakers are calling you an underdog! You were 35 points better than these guys the last time you lined up across from them, and now you're an underdog! Men, you can't get more disrespected than that! They don't care what you did last year - they're saying you're going to lose tonight. So, it's time for you to go out there and refresh their by-god memories! It's time for you to go out their and take back your respect! If what you did to this team last year wasn't enough to earn some respect...then you've got to walk out their, into their house, and show them, all over again, why they can't matchup with the University of Tennessee. Tonight, you send a message...to Cal, to the media, to the oddsmakers, and every other team on our schedule - The University of Tennessee will not be overlooked, will not be disrespected, and will not take a backseat to anyone. Now go out their and kick their a$$!
