He does. Was not his first choice but now he loves it!

Nice. Not the sexiest or most glamorous airplane, but you can't argue with it's combat record. Is he hoping to eventually transition to the F-35B?

Not really. It's based on the original British design, but manufactured in the U.S. and (most importantly) flown and maintained by U.S. Marines in service of the U.S.A.
Yes really.

The Brits quit building the Harrier... too technical for them I guess. I've voiced my bias here before; if your son (THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE SIR!) wants a true killing machine, nothing beats the A10 Thunderbolt ("Warthog"). 2.5 times the ordnance of a B17... and that nose-to-tail cannon! Ugly, but lethal.

The whole squadron is. Construction is underway. Timeline is maybe two years.

The AV-8B Harrier II is a very different airplane from the original British Harrier Jump Jet on which it is based. Manufactured in the U.S. and in the service of the U.S. military. The British version of the Harrier II was actually an offshoot of the American-made AV-8B. So I don't think someone saying "USA!" is at all wrong or inappropriate. That was my only point.

I was at the Ramstein Airshow circa 1977 ( when they still flew over the crowds). I was walking back to the bus when I heard a huge noise coming from behind. I turned to see this beast hovering in the air and I freaked out. It was pretty new then and I'm not sure I even knew it existed. I must have been like a pygmy in New Guinea looking at an iphone for the first time. An amazing plane. I would be proud if my son flew one!

The AV-8B is/was built in the USA, but I doubt it's still in production. The F-35 (a real hoss) will be replacing the Harrier and AV-8B.:)

Harrier jets from VMA-542 out of Cherry Point. (My son's squadron, but he's not flying.) Could someone take a video and perhaps post it on YouTube? He said the weather looks OK...they sent four jets.
Please thank him for his service!
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! 🇺🇸
