It’s officially no longer wishful thinking for Vol fans. Darrin Kirkland Jr. was indeed on the practice field today and No. 34 appeared to be moving well and working with no limitations.
Elsewhere at linebacker Cortez McDowell was back on the field and looked like he was in good shape, giving the staff more options at linebacker than they’ve had in some time.
Coleman Thomas looked like he got most of the first team reps at center today with Jack Jones back and rolling at right guard. Jashon Robertson was in his customary home at left guard and seemed to be back in form after playing only on special teams against Alabama. Freshman Marcus Tatum got some work at right tackle today, so that one bears watching for the rest of the week.
Chance Hall was back at practice, and not in a green jersey, but Tatum appeared to get the core work at right tackle in the full unit work we saw.
Tennessee worked Josh Smith, Emmanuel Moseley and Jauan Jennings as punt returners today with Smith appearing to be the first option.
Rob Lewis

Noteworthy, first off, to me was that Josh Smith and Jauan Jennings got the majority of work on punt return, and it would be pretty shocking per folks on campus if the Vols open with anyone other than Smith back deep for punts to begin the game.
Along the offensive front, Coleman Thomas worked at both center and tackle but got far more reps at center while Marcus Tatum lined up at right tackle when the Vols appeared to roll out their first five --- at least on this Tuesday practice. The left side saw Brett Kendrick and Jashon Robertson while Jack Jones, thumb-cast and all, manned the right guard spot.

Chance Hall practiced but remained limited. Other players who logged work at center were Kendrick, Jones and Ryan Johnson.
Understandably, there’s a steep learning curve for a guy like Tatum, who worked against both Jonathan Kongbo and LaTroy Lewis on the edge. Kongbo has freakish athleticism --- and coaches still will seek to use him inside this week some if all goes as planned --- while Lewis is the savvy veteran. Kendrick did some decent work against Derek Barnett on the left edge --- but Barnett likewise exited one matchup with Kendrick with his left shirt-sleeve ripped from shoulder to forearm.
While it’s pretty clear what Tennessee would do if something changed to the status of Dylan Wiesman, who was declared back by Butch Jones and other players on Monday, it is less clear what Tennessee would do if Micah Abernathy, still a question mark, is not available Saturday at safety.
Brice

Kirkland seemed to be moving around pretty well during the periods open to reporters. And he was taped up pretty significantly, too, which is a good indication that the staff planned on pushing him a little during the day. If he hadn’t been taped up, he wouldn’t have been doing much today, in my opinion.
Butch Jones wasn’t kidding when he said more newcomers would be sprinkled in with the Vols’ special-teams units. Junior safety Todd Kelly Jr. and Moseley were the only starter defensive starters I noticed on the first-team punt-return unit.
Finally, the play of the day — at least the early part of the day — was another frustrating reminder of just how good junior cornerback Justin Martin can be. Martin made a slick, one-handed interception while defending a wide receiver in a drill, and he made a tough play look simple. And that’s why he’s so frustrating. He’s one of this team’s most talented players every time he steps on the field, but injuries and consistency issues have prevented him from emerging as the star he could be. It makes you shake your head sometimes.
Rucker

Senior cornerback Malik Foreman and junior running back Jalen Hurd were the only players wearing green, non-contact jerseys during the portion of Tuesday’s practice that was open to media.
As expected, junior Kendal Vickers, sophomore Shy Tuttle and sophomore Quay Picou received most of the early work at defensive tackle, although defensive ends Kyle Phillips, Dimarya Mixon and Jonathan Kongbo, among others, could help there during Saturday’s game at South Carolina.
At running back, sophomore John Kelly and true freshman Carlin Fils-aime appeared to be getting most of the work behind Hurd during individual drills. Coach Butch Jones said Monday that junior Alvin Kamara won’t play against the Gamecocks because of a knee injury, although he “doesn’t need surgery” right now.
Callahan

* Once again, defensive end Kyle Phillips took snaps mainly inside at tackle, getting into it with Austin Sanders during one competitive rep.

* Quarterback Josh Dobbs looked mighty lonely stretching by himself Tuesday. The senior is Tennessee’s lone captain (Cam Sutton, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Kamara) still healthy.

* Tennessee utilized a number of underclassmen on the first-team punt team, including Nigel Warrior and Daniel Bituli.

Back on the practice field today for the Vols:

Brett Kendrick
Jack Jones
Kirkland Jr
McDowell
Malik Foreman
Baylen Buchanan
Evan Berry
It will be interesting to see who gets the start at Will. I have a feeling it will be Jumper and that does not bother me one bit. I think no matter who starts at LB Jumper will get significant snaps because he has earned them. I think Elliot Berry has earned snaps also.

We moving Phillips to DT in the long term or is this just to help with depth with all of the injuries this season.

Absolutely awesome to hear all these guys back!
1. Moseley does not need to be returning punts/kicks
2. Martin needs to just be on the damn field
3. What is nagging Abernathy that he would still be questionable? Hammy?
4. Interesting Picou getting first reps(good for him) over Phillips or Kongbo inside....

Looks like CBJ made the right call. These guys probably wouldnt have upset Bama, but having them healthy for this last stretch is crucial.
