99% of DL have bellies. Comes with the territory.
yep. McKenzie isn't any better having lost 40 pds. Maybe worse.
there's a list of NFL guys that wouldn't play for Butch because they've got bellies. Wilfork immediately comes to mind. yeh, yeh, 0 gap nose gaurd, blah, blah, blah.
same thing with LBs. Oh, Ray Lewis, you're 270 pds., so you can't play LB.
last I checked defensive players don't play offensive snaps. No D lineman is required to play every defensive series.A defensive player out of shape would never survive in the system. Our offense plays no huddle up speed and provides the defensive players more snaps than they would be if we were a prostyle team.
We will never be a defense that leads the league in yards allowed. We have to be at defense that takes the ball away.

Our offensive scheme predicates that our defense will play for more defensive snaps that a team that does not run our offensive scheme. You cannot have out of shape defensive players on your defense if you're going to be successful in any regard.
I think the previous poster just meant that just because a guy doesn't look like Johnathan Kongbo doesn't mean he isn't in shape. Kmac is my no means chiseled but he can still play a whole football game. Alexis Johnson probably isn't conditioned for 40-50+ snaps a game right now, but he doesn't have to be. If he can go in on one play a series and make a difference, then he's in shape enough for me.
I know what he meant but using Wilfork and Ray Lewis as examples were poor. Lewis is a physical specimen and Wilfork is a great athlete and in tremendous shape despite his body.
Alexis might be able to play a couple snaps but I doubt he's in football shape.
Ah I gotcha. Well, to be fair Johnson has already played a couple of snaps a month ago at Battle of Bristol and was disruptive while he was in the game. He'll be good enough to come off the bench and fill in for Vickers/Kmac/Tuttle when they need a break. He's surprisingly athletic for a big guy and if nothing else will take up a double team. I'm confident in this man.
