Am I the only one that thinks Michigan is a little high? I think they should be between 8 and 12.

Agree. Not sure why they'd be higher than us at all, much less 8 spots and in the top 5 to boot. Harbaugh effect I suppose. Otherwise, list looks reasonable and #11 for our Vols looks about right.

Only way to explain it

I think #11 is about right. Not too high or too low. Don't believe the Michigan hype either. They beat a playoff contender by a fluke last second play and now everyone is jocking harbaughs n*ts.

Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, we'd beat them.

We'd beat everyone above us. :good!:

I'd say everybody above us except Clemson. We can beat the other 9 teams though including Bama. I just think Clemson would be too much for us to handle with Watson as a dual threat QB even though we should have a solid defense this coming season.

I think if we were to play Clemson it would be a shootout though. 30's-40's scoring for both teams but Clemson would probably squeak by us. Clemson could end up happening if we make it all the way to the playoffs. That would be nice!

Not many years ago USC was in the top 3 and usually ended the season ranked 15-20. Notre Dame is another team that usually starts high and drops a couple games each year.

National media love affairs:

1. Notre Dame. 25% of the country having a Catholic background guarantees this will continue.

2. USC (and to a lesser extent, UCLA). Huge market for readers/viewers/clickers, Los Angeles. Having star power with Hollywood and getting your band on a Fleetwood Mac album don't hurt, either. It's less about football than looking good, but hey, they used to play football pretty well, too. Used to.

3. Texas. Big $$ guarantees love. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was in Texas for a reason, yanno?

4. Michigan and Ohio State. The Rust Belt is bleeding its people away to the south and west, but still gets far more than its fair share of journalists who love to keep the halcyon days of the 60s and 70s on everyone's radar, as if they just happened. Okay, okay, Ohio State is still earning the media attention.

5. Army-Navy. The only schools who don't benefit in the polls for the love they get from the media. If they got the same treatment by pollsters as ND and USC, Army would start each year ranked #15 before going 3-9. Again. [truth in advertising: Army is my alma mater, so I'm biased].

6. UConn and Rutgers. I know, neither team gets TONS of attention (in football; b-ball is a different story), but every time they hiccup in a convincing manner, ESPN (headquarters in Connecticut) goes nuts over them. They really loved the Schiano years at Rutgers. Plus, you know, NYC, only the biggest media market in the country.

7. The Rose Bowl. Yeah, I know, it's a bowl, not a team. But still, the amount of gushing that goes on each December leading up to New Year's Day is downright embarrassing. Yes, it's the grand daddy of them all (thanks for that, Keith Jackson), but several decades have passed since it served as the de facto national championship game.
