I want to set the record straight about this incident since I was in the opposite lane of traffic adjacent and slightly in front of the truck in which the victim (Gasque) was a passenger. This happened about 8:40 pm on Shop road a couple hundred yards south of George Rogers Blvd. Game traffic was still bumper to bumper in both lanes and I had my window rolled down and had come to a stop. Gasque's vehicle was also stopped. A vehicle in which Simms was a passenger was waiting to exit a parking lot onto Shop Rd. I heard and saw Simms and Gasque yelling at each other. I do not know what they were yelling about. Simms exited his vehicle and approached Gasque's vehicle. When Simms got close to the vehicle, Gasque opened his door and began to exit the vehicle. I saw Simms punch Gasque a couple of times. Gasque ended up lying on the pavement underneath his own vehicle in front of the right rear tire. Almost instantly, the driver of Gasque's truck pulled forward and ran over Gasque lengthwise of his body from his feet to his head. I do not know if the argument was over the game or who pulled for what team. I do know that Simms had on an Alabama logo polo shirt when the incident happened, but he left the scene. Simms later returned with a white t-shirt on.
The article states Gasque fell under the wheel of a passing vehicle. That is not true. He ended up underneath his own vehicle that was stopped at the time. The driver of that vehicle pulled forward and ran over Gasque.

From the comments...
Very sad story. The poor guy who was ready to fist fight had to be horrified to win a fight with no serious injuries and then watch the angry fight losers become the victim of his friends idiocy. I wonder if the driver had to do blood tox. If he/she was drunk they should be charged with manslaughter.

Manslaughter for pulling forward in traffic? How do you figure? It wouldn't be hard to imagine not knowing your friend is knocked out underneath the car.

Sounds like the Bama fan got in some cheap shots as the victim was getting out of the truck.

Pretty typical of the redneck trash that parade around here in their crimson garb and elephant bumper stickers. The real bad thing about bammer losing Saturday was that the domestic violence calls tripled at all local police stations.

If you are drunk you are easily at the "reckless indifference" threshold. When your friend gets out to fight, if you are a man you put the truck in park and help him. If you are a woman, you do not drive off and leave him.

Where you not one of the people talking about how bad it was to get jumped in a fight?

Fights are not professional. If you can kneecap someone with the metal door you are getting out of you go for it. Sounds to me like the victim was wasted.

What is wrong with you...

Sounds like you'll be posting from behind bars someday with that mentality.

By your logic, might as well just shank the guy in the neck.

Why? If he wants to be an idiot and fight someone let him handle his own business. If others got involved I would help the guy out short of being drawn into a fight this guy helped create, let people suffer the consequences of their own stupid mistakes.

Now that I've said that I find it terrible this guy lost his life due to stupidity.

Hate to hear that.

Bammers will count another championship, though.

Wow...this whole thing is a tragedy but yes I posted that it is hellaciously wrong to jump someone with a group of people. But if your friend is getting in a fight you "get his back" That means that if he is down and the other person is not willing to end the fight without stomping him you take that guy out.

I am assuming that crying about using the car door guy has never been involved in an altercation where you are sitting in a vehicle and someone is trying to hit you close by it. Your door works as a shield, but it is even more effective as a weapon. Fighting is not a time to play nice. Fighting should be avoided, but if you have to get in a fight you had better use what you have to your advantage.

Friend was probably drunk. Could have been a coward. Was definitely stupid.

What world do you live in.. Street fights are very dangerous. If someone comes at you with intent to do harm and you choose to stand your ground or have no place to go you better be ready to do whatever it takes so you can live another day..

I'd rather take my chances in court as opposed to being dead..

That being said, very unfortunate incident that sounds like it could have been avoided..

This and sitting in your car with the door shut is a weak position to be in. Are you going to let the guy walk up and punch you repeatedly while your stuck in your seat?

How exactly could you NOT know. He was your passenger 20 seconds before that, then he started yelling, then exited and fist faught someone and fell. (Ah, I sure better keep an eye on this here light?!) (Nevermind my buddy, someone else will pick him up?!) WTF?
